storm 4 meteorologist tom kierein joins us with the first forecast. tom? >> this is serious heat and a big area under an excessive heat warning and includes all of northern virginia and all these counties in pink and the district of clum bexau the baltimore metro area and this is in effect until 9:00 this evening and this is a result of high heat and high humidity. now, right now, temperature reagan national an astonishing 97 degrees here just past 11:00 in the morning. last hour it was 96 and it only has to climb another five degrees to tie the all-time record high for the month of june. all across virginia, much of maryland and west virginia, we're already into the 90s and as we look at the heat index, look at the heat index now reagan national is at 103. heat index is what it feels like with the combination of the temperature and the humidity. so, for the rest of the afternoon, we'll have our temperatures peaking in perhaps 101, maybe even 102 in a few locations and the high humidity in place and then dropping back down to the upper 90s by early this ev

tom kierein is watching things in the weather center for us. tom, bopup thunderstorms, that's the last thing people want to hear right now. >> yeah, but unlike last night, they're not widespread and don't have any reports of any widespread wind damage, but we have some very potent thunderstorms popping up south of washington over the last, oh, about an hour, hour and a half or so. you can see the areas in orange. those are the severe thunderstorm warning areas, and i'll zoom in and show you. these are the zones being affected right now. the nearest counties are in orange and into spotsylvania county, storms moving east at about 35 miles an hour. these are the towns that are affected. these towns are -- bowling green, arcadia, spotsylvania itself. bells crossroad. granite springs. all of these are in the path of this storm that's moving east at about the 35 miles an hour. you can see these dark colors in here and this pink zone. this is the strongest storm right here. this is north of charlottesville and these are tracking just about due east. fr

tom kierein's in storm center 4 with a look at the forecast. tom? >>> what a spectacular sunrise.unrise just three minutes away at 5:43. now two minutes away. approaching 5:41. looking at storm 4 radar, to the south it's cloudy in the moving areas of color. those are light sprinkles. they're moving across fauquier county out of culpeper, into prince william and southern and western fairfax. that's advancing east and crossing the potomac toward charles county now. they're getting sprinkles there near la plata. that's drifting east. on the eastern shore, south of easton, they're getting sprinkles there. and as we look at the hometown forecast for culpeper, there still could be lingering showers by noontime. and during the afternoon, maybe even thundershowers. by noontime, upper 60s during the afternoon. near 70 or so with a passing thundershower. clearing by late evening. by 11:00, 50s. by this time tomorrow, again the low 50s starting off thursday. a big change for the weekend. the seven-day outlook in ten minutes. danella? >>> thanks, tom. no accidents to warn but. a good sign. tr

meteorologist tom kierein and his forecast coming up. >>> welcome back to our extendsed coverage. this proved to be a deadly storm in the district as well. one person lost his life because of downed power lines adding to the danger, some lines still down and wrapped in huge trees. >> look at that. just -- you just -- you're rendered speechless. some streets are still blocked with tons of debris left to haul away. news 4 derrick ward is live in northwest tonight. hi, derrick. >> reporter: how are you? for the past 24 hours or so we've been pretty much show ug a gofer's eye view of the city. take a look. lots of oak upturned trees, lots of exposed tree roots. that's the order of the post-storm incident here's in the district and it's been enough damage, not just tree roots, downed power lines and other things that the city is say mong the jurisdictions declares a state of emergency. a night of violent wind and rain in the district and in one case the consequences can deadly. here on 31st street in yornlg west a fallen tree took down a power line and landed on a car. >> caused a fire

tom kierein here. good morning, tom. >>> good morning. we've been watching radar the last couple of hours really begin to pick up in strength here. this line now coming into west virginia, down into eastern kentucky, southwestern virginia, advancing north and east. it may hold together and move into the shenandoah valley perhaps another three hours or so. closer to washington, a few sprinkles now in fairfax, fauquier, prince william, down toward fredericksburg. that's advancing to the north. we may have a few sprinkles into the metro area going through the next couple of hours. now, as we look going forward over the next 48 hours, we will likely get some showers and thundershowers popping up by mid-afternoon, by around 3:00. and then after that is whether we could get strong storms. some in the yellow and orange zones across virginia, around early evening, then to the district and maryland by about mid evening this friday evening. so of these could produce heavy downpours that may cause some isolated flooding. also strong, gusty winds tha

tom kierein standing by the tell us if we can expect rain today. tom. >> eye, i think we probably will. coming in out of the north and west ahead of a cool front we have scattered showers. there's been a little bit of thunder and lightning associated with it. we look at the radar going in. right now across much of mon montgomery county, the area of green is light rain. moderate showersing maybe a little bit of thunder and lightning moving into howard county. there have been some heavy downpours near ocean city but that area north of washington, no severe weather associated with that but there mate be light smours over columbia and elsewhere. along i-66 on the way out toward front royal, that area getting a little bit of moderate rain in northern fauquier county north of warrenton. that is drifting off to the southeast as well. and behind this as it does move on through, we'll have lower humidity moving in. all these areas on this severe storm risk map are under the threat for some strong storms that might produce some wind damage and these are areas

storm center 4 meteorologist tom kierein joins us with the first forecast. tom? >> well, barbara, this morning we've had a lot of cloudiness around the metro area. there have been some breaks in the clouds to our south. southern maryland, northern neck, up towards fredericksburg, the clouds are closing back in as we look at storm 4 radar going back over the last several hours. you can see all the moving color, that is rain, there's a little thunder and lightning just beginning to develop, the one red spot in the lower left of your screen, just north of charlottesville is a thundershower. not a bad storm, not severe storm, but producing thunder and lightning and heavy rain there. and as you look closer to washington, just a few specks of green on the radar farther west and north, a few scattered sprinkles showing up. still sunshine, southern maryland, northern neck, part of the eastern shore, that area is in the zone, as is all of virginia, all of the areas under the ylo area in a severe risk zone for later this afternoon, into this evening. covers all of maryland
