tom kierein is outside with the latest on our forecast. do you feel the temperature change already, tom? >> yeah, it really has. it's dropped about seven, eight degrees in the last half hour or so here in northwest where the winds are beginning to pick up. we've got a blue sky here now, and lotting of sunshine. i think clouds will be rolling back in as the super cold air arrive later. now, as we look at temperatures, 52 at reagan national, while it's only near freezing in hagerstown and out in the mountains. the cold air really beginning to push in now. the temperatures will continue to drop into the afternoon. here's the hour-by-hour forecast. look at that temperature. it looks like a slide all the way down into the teens by late this evening. in fact, by 4:00, i think we'll be near freezing. wind chills in the teens. the winds gusting 30 to 40 miles an hour, diminish by late tonight. and then, by dawn tomorrow, i think we'll be down to the single digits much of the region, wind chills subzero. afternoon highs on tuesday, a lot of clouds

storm team 4 meteorologist tom kierein here now with more on the cold blast we're expecting. tom, good morning. >>> good morning. big contrast going to be moving in as the day progresses. here are your weather headlines. a milder morning. in fact, right now, our temperatures around the region are hovering in the upper 20s north and west of washington to near 40 degrees right at washington, southern and eastern suburbs, near 40. southern maryland through central virginia, in the mid 40s. mid 40s central shenandoah valley. even into the 50s parts of west virginia now. but then during the afternoon, cold winds begin to move in. and we will have windchills plunging. look, by 4:00 this afternoon, windchills will be down into the teens. winds gusting around 30 miles per hour. then a frigid nationwide coming up. by 8:00 p.m., windchills down to just near ten degrees. and look at our windchills by this time tomorrow morning. they will be sub-zero starting off tuesday morning. so a very frigid tuesday is on tap for us tomorrow. we'll have morning lows just near eight degrees. afternoon

rst over to storm team 4 meteorologist tom kierein for a look at these cold changes. tom? >>> you can see the side streets are covered with snow now. the treated surfaces are just wet and most of the accumulating snow is on the eastern shore and quickly exiting a few lingering bands of some snow now in montgomery, northern prince george's county, and that is also including pat of the it can d.c. that band of that snow is continuing to head off to the east now into anne arundel county. a lingering ban in montgomery county, here in fairfax as well down to prince william getting one band of light snow. how much did we get? generally around 1 to 2 to 3 inches. further north and west parts of howard county, northern montgomery got you up to 4 to 5 inches as did loudoun county. generally around 3 inches north and west. and off to a cold start. temperatures right now are down into the low to mid-20s most of the region. and the winds are really picking up in just the last hour. we've had gusts 30 to 40 miles an hour. just had a gust at reagan national to 41 males an hour and look

storm team 4 meteorologist tom kierein has joined us. tom, has the winter mix moved out? >> yeah, it has. temperatures have warmed up a little bit above freezing, just a couple of degrees, and that has made a huge difference. still, there are icy spots on sidewalks and steps and some driveways and parking lots that are untreated. looking at storm team 4 radar, you see all the areas of pink that you mentioned earlier pretty much dissipated. here's the pink, the icing on our legend there. any area in green is light lingering rain. it will temporarily come to an end in the metro area. there's another area of rain farther south and west of us. that will be moving into the metro area again as we get into the afternoon but not a lot of rain, just some light rain moving through. watch out still a few icy spots around. temperatures in the mid 30s. reagan national is at 35. most areas are well above freezing now so the ice is slowly melting. it did accumulate on some of the vegetation and we're going to have perhaps some heavy downpours, maybe a few severe storms. i'll show you th

we'll check in with tom kierein. what do we need to get ready for the day, tom? >>> you'll need a coat now. temperatures down near freezing. later today, looks like a mild afternoon. snow moves in tomorrow. and then a frigid blast after that. so for this afternoon, i think we'll have highs reaching near 50 degrees right around washington. maybe even low 50s to mid 50s farther south across north central virginia from fredericksburg over to culpeper and parts of fauquier county, around warrenton. and the farther north and west, afternoon highs should be making it into the upper 40s. and mid 40s for highs northern shenandoah valley, panhandle of west virginia, western maryland, and around the bay, afternoon highs should be around 50 degrees. then, yes, snow is likely tomorrow. how much? it does look like around the metro area, we could get two to five inches of snow. and one to three inches farther south and east of the metro area. and farther north and west, though, i think the dark blue zone, there's a pretty good chance, three to six inches of snow, the timing on

storm team4 meteorologist tom kierein joins us with our first forecast for midday today. tom? >> hey, barbara, good morning. what a dramatic change from this morning. right around dawn, our temperatures were near zero throughout much of our viewing area. must of west virginia, virginia, maryland, in the low single digits, even closer to washonnhe low to mid-single digits this morning. but look at the change. it has warmed up dramatically. we're well into the mid to upper 20s now. shenandoah valley, martinsburg got down to 2 below zero. it's warmed up 22 degrees there just in the last five hours or so. and temperatures, shenandoah valley, in the mid-20s. petersburg, west virginia, right now at 30 degrees. there, it got down to zero as well. even on the eastern shore, it got down to near zero in cambridge, about you now up to 28 degrees there. what a tremendous change with the sunshine that is coming down, and this gorgeous blue sky. storm team4 radar scanning the sky. no snow around the region. however, the radar may be picking up some rain on sunday. we'll look at that in deta

storm team4 meteorologist amelia segal is in for tom kierein, and she joins us with the first forecast for midday. good morning. >> good morning to you, barbara. just looking at the live picture there with the monument in the background, the sunshine certainly deceiving, because it is bitterly cold. right now, we're looking at temperatures in washington of 17 degrees. gaithersburg coming in at 10. manassas at 16. so temperatures are in the teens. it's so cold right now that a wind chill advisory remains in effect for areas to the north of washington just for another hour or so. this includes loudon and montgomery county, as well as frederick county, and northern falkier county. wind chill temperatures will be as low as 10 to 5 degrees below zero. when wind chills are this low, this could lead to frostbite and hypothermia, so you definitely need to keep the gloves, hat, scarf on today, in addition to the warmish jacket. winds now anywhere from 5 to 15 miles an hour, so this is how it feels outside, when you factor in the winds. about 6 in washington. zero in camp springs, barbara. now,

storm team4 meteorologist chuck bell is in for tom kierein and begins the winter storm coverage. good morning. >> good morning, barbara. good wednesday morning,  everybody. temperatures are struggling to get out of the single digits. we've made it above single digits in many spots, but that's only half the story. wind chill advisories continue at least until noon. unlikely they'll have to extend the advisory beyond that. look at the current wind chills. minus 13 in hagertown. minus 9 the current wind chill in leesburg. winds are still gusting between 20 and 30 miles per hour. so it's very windy outside, and there's a lot of blowing snow around, as well. current temperatures -- single digits to low teens across much of the area right now. it is 13 degrees in college park, 10 at andrews air force base, and 9 at reston town center. silver spring, here's your planner forecast the rest of the day. 15 by noon. 18 is all you'll muster in silver spring for a temperature. 16 by 6:00 tonight. and back down to 13 by 9:00. so what's coming? near-zero tonight, and snow chances tomorrow and
