joining us now is maria tadeo and tom mackenzie. tom, what is the latest on aid spending for ukraine? tom: we are getting some of the top line numbers. you mentioned that support and the agreement by the u.s. house. about $13.5 billion of aid. all told about $6.5 billion will go toward funding the movement of u.s. troops and equipment in eastern europe. about 6.8 billion dollars will go toward refugees and assisting on a humanitarian level the economies of eastern europe as they struggle with this influx of refugees, the largest since the second world war. on the ground, the refugees and the numbers continue to increase. i've been speaking to a number of them as they cross over the border this morning, the border from ukraine. hundreds of people this morning just in the last few hours coming across. i spoke to one mother, two days from kyiv as they made their way across under heavy bombardment. it is a deeply uncertain future. the imf approving emergency funding of 1.4 billion. ukrainian officials say they expect the first tranche of

tom mackenzie is on the ground. the very latest on the situation? tom: one of the first things people say when you speak to refugees who continue crossing the border is when do we think they can head back home. they left jobs, houses, many loved ones. reasons why within 50 kilometers of this border, every hotel is taken up. refugees are hoping they can be able to return to ukraine in relatively short order. that looks very unlikely, given the meeting we had between the foreign ministers of ukraine and russia in turkey yesterday. the minister saying he wants to continue the demilitarization of ukraine and wants ukraine to recall sovereignty claims over crimea. the ukrainian minister saying it was 10 among calling them to surrender, which the ukrainians are in no mood to do. they will continue talks, but the goal is enormous between the two sides. the implications for people on the ground as they continue crossing from ukraine into poland looking for safety is enormous. looking at humanitarian corridors, president zelensky saying civilians have been a

tom mackenzie, give us a sense of the latest situation on the ground, where watching the harrowing images but the flow of people is still strong across the border. tom: absolutely, there are thousands of people who continue to come across the border, we are about a 30 minute drive from the polish-ukrainian border. this is a town that absorbed a lot of the rescued folks because of the railroad behind me. a shopping center has been converted to a welcoming center essentially for many of these refugees where the people of poland have been providing services like hot food, clothing and other things that they need, medication. people have come across the border with just a couple of bags and spent three or four days trying to get here and left everything behind back in ukraine. at a railway station yesterday, thousands of people were packed into a very small space. dani: tom, we are having little problem with your audio. tom giving us an update there from near the border of ukraine and poland. we will get him back shortly on the program, tom mackenzie. rush is retaliating against sanctions, se

tom: tom mackenzie in poland, away from ella roos, on the border with millions of refugees. am not seeing enough reporting on what happens next. the refugees get to the border. then what? tom m: we are on the border crossing between poland and ukraine. logistically, there are facilities in place that have been put in place by the polish military, by the polish police, and volunteers all over the world. but logistically, this is just the beginning. they've had that journey through ukraine. they have waited for hours, overnight, 90% of them women and children, in freezing conditions. this is just the start logistically. they have to work their way through poland if they find a place of residence, and indeed other parts of europe. the polish government has put aside $7 billion to help fund this. you are absolute right, we are in the early opening stages of this. one point numeral people into poland just in the last 12 days alone -- 1.2 million people into poland just in the last 12 days alone. tom k: between romania and poland is slovakia and hungary. do they have the residence

tom: with tom mackenzie on the border of poland and 2.1 million and counting refugees, it is a movementi'm not sure yet that it is a movement west. there seems to be real focus on the true adjacencies to russia. jonathan: chancellor scholz pleading with the russian leader to deliver an immediate cease-fire. lisa: everyone wants this to end , and yet we don't see any potential inroads there. if lavrov came out and said that cease fire talks were not on the table, with the foreign minister of ukraine, the mutt where the purpose of these talks. because ultimately the cease-fire is the condition to start some of these for ukrainians. jonathan: i would encourage everyone to watch the news conference with the ukrainian foreign minister. you got the impression from that that his counterpart had no control, no authority whatsoever sitting across the other side of the table. lisa: he even said we hoped to arrange serious talks with ukraine's president. that means that these were not serious. i will point does vladimir putin have enough to go back to his people and say it was worth it to end this
