tom nichols. start with new polls that show impeachment for president trump growing. 52% now approve of the impeachment inquiry into president trump when it comes to impeachment and removal from office, the poll found a 10% increase in support. just over the last week, now at 47%. the latest cnn poll found 47% of americans say they backed impeaching and removing trump. 45% said they did not. and the latest reuters poll, 45% said the president should be impeached. that's up eight points from just a week ago. meanwhile, two sources with direct knowledge of the situation told nbc news that president trump told allies days ago that he would start worrying about losing republican support if national polls went above 50% of americans supporting impeachment. >> and -- >> boy, joe, that's -- that's worrisome for the president. >> well, it is worrisome and also, as we've said before in the last hour, you look at what happened yesterday, it's not even the events that took place. it was the president's errat

i don't know, tom nichols.or the core support of donald trump, for the people who have been with him from the beginning, there's almost nothing, it's the old shoot somebody on fifth avenue argument the president has made. there's almost nothing that will take them out of the bunker with him. >> yeah, i think there's two things that are interesting about these numbers from the poll this morning. one is that the president has managed to put himself in the same territory where nixon was right around the summer of 1974 when he was at the end of the watergate process. i mean, the president, i mean, the number for removing the president from office didn't start to clear 50% until late summer of '74 just before nixon resigned. so the president has, you know, he's overperforming here in terms of where the poll is. but the second issue, i think, is this may be where the polls stay now. because that 38%, as you say, willie, they're just not going to budge. it doesn't matter, the president literally is walking outside, i

with us is tom nichols. welcome him back to the broadcast, professor ever national security affairs. he is an expert in this area, author of half a dozen books. usual reminder. when tom is on the broadcast, the opinions he expresses are his own. tom, having pointed that out, first of all, subsection question. how many troops ballpark do we have in the middle east? why does the president keep saying he is bringing the troops home? >> well, between the middle east and central asia we have something like 60 to 70,000 troops overseas. and the president i think says these things because they are promises he made to his base and he knows he is not going to get checked on it by his base. they will believe him if he says the troops are coming home. so he says it because it's effective and it works. it's like when he goes to rallies and he says i'm bringing the troops back home, i have beaten isis, you know, the world is grateful. he is not really speaking to the foreign policy community or to the informed listener.

further the great point that you're both making, atlantic this morning, you've got an op-ed by tom nicholsis a conservative, but he writes wi s witwrites, t secretary of state overshot the mark by making an accusation without proof. gabbard will now dismiss real concerns about her just as conspiracy theorizing. >> listen, it is true that there are questions about gabbard and whether or not she would pursue a third-party run. she says she wouldn't. that was part of the conversation secretary clinton was having. obviously, her positions are not in line in several spots, as seen on the debate stage last week, with the rest of the democratic field. so it's not as if it's unthought of, what secretary clinton was saying, apart from the russian asset piece, about how republicans may try to woo gabbard to their team in some way or utilize her separation from the rest of the democrats in some way in the 2020 race. again, i just think that when you throw something out there like that, without evidence, it's hard to sort of figure out what the next step is, other than it gives gabbard a platform now.
