tom perez is my second favorite department of justice official. we are very honored today that tom perez has come from washington, dc, to give welcoming remarks here at this summit. tom perez is the assistant attorney general of the civil rights division in washington, dc, he was nominated for that position by president obama and sworn in in october of 2009 and we are all the lucky -- we are all very lucky that that happened in october of 2009. tom has spent his entire career in public service and on protecting the civil rights of our most vulnerable people. tom actually joined the civil rights division as a young lawyer and while he was there he prosecuted some of the most significant cases in the country. lawyers in the civil rights division get fanned out to places in the country to handle cases in mississippi and alabama and california and all over and tom was one of those people. he was sent to texas to handle a very significant hate crime case when he was a young lawyer that involved a gang of white supremacists that went on a killing spree

sort of a coincidental temporal box yesterday, president obama nominating the first hispanic in tom perezy about what went wrong in the last election. obviously, they don't like top perez as nominee. mostly for his politics. >> the basic problem the republican party has had when it's come to nonwhite voters, this is sort of at the root of it. you can go back, if you look at the message that was in this autopsy report, all about inclusion, respect, outreach, you can find repeated by past chairman, presidential nominees, major congressional leaders going back to the 1960s and '70s. the critical moment and modern evolution in terms of its relationships with voters, it was 1964. now they're getting into territory where the same thing is almost happening with latinos. they do slightly better, but are sort of permanently about 25%. so the most glaring problem here, we have rhetoric about immigration when it's somebody like perez. there's some rhetorical problem, but a deeper problem and that is that the republican party is sort of on the right side of a cultural divide for 20 years. it could af

tom perez's tenure heading up to the doj has been controversial to say the least, but he is beloved by those on the left as someone who embodies virtually all the principles they stand for. what does it say that president obama is proceeding with that nomination despite some of the controversies that emerged when he they floated the trial balloon earlier? >> well, in washington we can tell a lot more about somebody's intent by what they do than what they say. what we've heard a lot said of the white house of late is that they're interested in reaching out to republicans and forming accords and looking to get past some of the partisan bickering that's gone on back and forth. what the president has done today in nominating mr. perez for this job was to throw down the gauntlet to republicans who-- for them, as you say, he is the embodiment of a kind of eralism that they say that the core of what's wrong with the obama administration. there are other people who probably share every bit of mr. perez's views as relates to the use of the law, labor unions, empowering labor unions, fighting ag
