i want to bring in tom perez, the chair of the democratic national committee. former assistant attorney general for civil rights. tom, in a statement that you put out, you have said elections have consequences and americans along with the soon-to-be democratic house will hold the president accountable for any interference in the special counsel's investigation. what do you make of what's happened, and how it all can -- this newly elected house hold the president accountable if this does mean interference? >> well, there's a law and there's a test that apply to what he just did. the law is the vacancies reform act. you can argue that it's ambiguous whether he could do what he just did. there's a test that is very unambiguous called the smell test. this doesn't pass the smell test, ali. i worked in the justice department starting with bush i. i'm proud of the work i did, starting in the late '80s as a career prosecutor. the common practice, the custom and it was well informed was when an attorney general left, you had a senate confirmed person in the seat. so that

let's bring in the democratic national chairman tom perez. we've been talking, tom -- thanks for coming on. we were talking about, what will the democrats do with their new power controlling the house of representatives. you have power over the purse strings of the federal budget, control tax party, your party does, control all entitlement spending, fix or leave alone essential security, medicare, medica medicaid, mess with obamacare or change the reforms in it. is it probing, investigating or legislating or what mix? >> it's going to be all of the above because we're going to fight to protect people with pre-existing conditions. we have been doing that since obamacare. we're going to continue to do it. we'll fight to protect social security, medicare and medicaid. i believe we can work through a bipartisan infrastructure bill that will put people to work in good jobs, that pay a middle class wage. and can help repair our roads and bridges and our pipes and all that. and those are -- those are real jobs that have real meaning. we have to addre

before tom perez, we're trying to get back to the strategy. you know i worked on this race, what stacey abrams was able to accomplish in georgia, the really important lesson there is the fact that she said i'm going to go to all 159 counties in this state, i'm going to talk to everybody, i'm going to unabashedly talk about who i am and what i care about and i think she also sent a message that you can do that and win, and we have to get away from these labels about, you know, expanding medicaid as a liberal issue or a conservative issue, it's a human issue. it's an issue that people care about. but i think what the party has to pay attention to is, if you look at what beto accomplished, what stacey accomplished all across this country where you have now new volunteers, new grassroots donors, new voters. her campaign identified 1.4 million democrats, potential democrats, and went out and set out a year and a half before the election to register those people, motivate those people, stay in contact with those people and turn people out. that's wh

. >> all right, joining me now is the chairman of the democratic national committee, tom perez, who'shere in florida. tom, can you hear me? i know it's loud where you are. >> yes, i can. >> good to see you. thank you for joining us. we are looking at the early voting numbers across the igs that. 29,339,000 versus last midterm election. the total for last midterm election was about 21 million. we are at 29 million and still have three days to go. what do you make of those early numbers? how do you think that breaks? >> well, at the moment i feel very good. you look at early voting numbers across the country -- i was looking in texas and georgia and you see democratic increases in millennial voters. it was something like 400% or 500% in those two states. i think millennial voters are democratic voters. we have more work to do. one thing that's abundantly clear to me, we are the opportunity to win. we are poised to win in places we have never won in years but we have a ton of dead heat races. that's where the president was here today. we have to bring it home. less than 100 hours until t

we are constantly talking to tom perez. we have a deputy that is muslim-american himself. that's huge for our community. so first i wanted to mention that. and then pivoting to my state senate race -- i announced for state senate in virginia a month ago. the primary is in june of next year. similar to abdul, the strongest supporters and donors to my campaign thus far has been leading progressive figures in virginia politics. i mean, our campaign that we are running right now is really based on this inclusive campaign that is going to be pushing for, you know, raising the minimum wage, the living wage in virginia to $15 an hour, making sure that we are prioritizing and defending and fighting for the rights of immigrant communities in virginia. the district i'm running in is a majority/minority district. more than 60% are non-white. it has been represented by the same person for the last 40 years that has been missing -- in my view has done nothing for these communities. our muslim community -- for the ones familiar with the district, there are thousands of muslims in that d

tom perez went on to say this is the president at his worst. what do you make of that? the president. i run campaigns. i don't talk about campaigns. i run them for living. i'm seeing every year in an off year election you have massive drop off of people who don't like my grandmama, but for every four years for president and i worry about off year elections. it is up to both parties to motivate their base, get people who only voted presidential campaigns to show up and that is what you see the president doing. jillian: this is a motivation tactic by the democratic party. >> i would say the president is sending people to the border, demonizing latino because he has to motivate his white republican conservative base and that is why he does it. jillian: what do you say? >> this is a major concern. most polls the number one concern for republicans is immigration and there are 10,000 people headed to the border, we have no idea who they are, many could have criminal records. we don't know. we -- they will make their way to the interior of the united states. it is a major conc
