joining me now is the chairman of the democratic national committee, tom perez. mr.man, before we get to the question of the debate stage, would the pending impeachment trial coming up, how will that affect the iowa caucus february 3rd if we are in the middle of an impeachment trial for the president before the senate? >> sure. the impeachment will have no impact on this tuesday's debate. when the impeachment trial starts, our senators are very good at walking and chewing gum. they understand the need to multitask. all of the candidates for president have built a really impressive infrastructure in iowa. and if they have to be in washington, all of our senators and frankly the voters stand that their first responsibility is to be in washington to carry out their very, very solemn responsibilities of serving as jurors. and i'm confident voters will understand that. and i know these candidates, they're very good multitaskers. >> but i realize it would not affect this tuesday's debate. but i'm saying if it becomes a longer trial, could it affect future debates? you have

tom perez was on with me with stephanie last week.people get called by pollsters and they're not choosing this candidates of color as their preference. they're not making the poll thresholds by making it into the debate. what do you think of that? >> first. i think the criteria that were set up by secretary perez and the democratic national committee were well intended. i think what's happened, though, the debate itself has taken on an outside importance. and it may influence the ability of terrific talent of the kind and the names mentioned. allowing voters to make their case, build their case. that means, it seems to me that this wonderful opportunity we have had to have -- to demonstrate to the american people the breadth and depth of diverse talent in our party, reflecting back the breadth and depth of reverse talent in america. that opportunity is being missed, it's time to reconsider the rules, it's a shame that we're having a debate that when america looks at it. will not see herself reflected as the opportunity to face that. >

for a closer look, we turn to the chairman of the democratic party, tom perez. have you here. >> always good to be here. >> brennan: what do you make of these polls? >> we have a deep bench and this is a fluid field. and this is not new for the run-up to new hampshire and iowa. we saw it in 2008 with senator obama, and with senator clinton. what i see are the following: fluid field because we have a deep bench. the enthusiasm is off the charts. 2008 was the high water mark for participation in iowa. i'm confident we're going to surpass that because there is so much energy across everywhere. and i'm equally confident that at the end of the day, we're going to come together around a nominee. i don't know who that is. i think the fact that we have such fluidity is a source of excitement. and that's why it is so important for us to understand the four early states constitute about 5% of the delegate count. they're an important 5%, but only 5%. so this is a marathon. >> brennan: it is a jump ball at this point. >> i would agree. >> brennan: for this week, we saw juli

. >> tom perez, the chairman of the -- the chairman of the democratic party, he was asked about thislack of diversity, what that means for the democratic primary. what is your take away? you thought about this a lot, in working with kamala. >> yeah, for sure. look, i think the dnc has done their level best to try to have a fair process throughout the primary and ensure as we head into the first contest in a few weeks that voters are really going to see a winnowed field that is based on not party rules necessarily, but based on voter sentiment. i think that, you know, vice president biden has proven tremendously durable among communities of color, specifically, specifically black voters in south carolina where he maintains a very significant lead. i think for candidates who, you know whether it was kamala or senator booker, or any of the other candidates, basically who have been trying to carve out a niche for themselves in this race, it has been very tough to penetrate his support among those voters. and i think that until you're able to view that, you're kind of trying to figure out

democratic party chairman tom perez said on msnbc this week tat the party would acknowledge and would happily admit that it was necessary to reschedule that candidate's debate if it turned out the debate would conflict with the impeachment trial of president trump in the senate. and i mean that makes sense. massachusetts senator elizabeth warren, minnesota senator amy klobuchar, vermont senator sanders are all qualified to participate and would need to be present in the senate if the senate impeachment trial is under way. they would be jurors in that trial effectively along with are r all the rest of the senators not running for president. you can't have a debate requires their president while simultaneously the constitutional imperative of impeachment also requires their presence thousands of miles away or hundreds of miles away. it's not the most important thing about the impeachment process at this point i know. but if in fact at some point next week the judiciary committee is going to put forward that resolution to convey the articles and name the impeachment managers and all that

i want to go out front to tom perez, the chairman of the democratic national committee.ff zeleny speaking there. he was mentioning the undecided issue. the poll shows only 40% of likely democratic caucus goers in iowa have made up their minds which means 60% haven't. that is a higher number of un undecideds than a comparable point in past races. what does this tell you? >> it tells me we have a deep field. every time you go see candidate a, you fall in love. then you go see candidate b and fall out. we have an embarrassment of riches. what i love about iowa voters is they take their role seriously. they're out there kicking the tires. and you know, i don't know who's going to win. anyone who tells you who's going to win the iowa caucus is lying to you. but what i do know is that when we complete iowa and then 90 days later we complete the mid-atlantic caucus which will take us to the end of april and 90% of the delegates will be allocated, i think we'll have a very clear sense of who our nominee will be. the thing i know for certain is that every democrat understands tha
