news4's tom sherwood joins us now. you have -- a veteran of d.c. journalism and covering politics here. the city has really been in the forefront of lgbt rights and civil rights. just for the region people say this has been a fast decision the nation changed quickly it hasn't been that fast. i talked to a former d.c. council member who in 1975, 40 years ago proposed legislation to make same-sex marriage legal. he told me today he was shouted down by the clergy and other people in the city, saying we can't possibly do that. wendy, it took 25 years for at-large council member in 2009 an openly gay member, to propose this and the council voted for it, 11-2. >> all right so, go over the region right now. virginia at this point still doesn't have it. but the people -- what -- how about for the people already married here are they free to move around the land? how long is it going to take? >> no. . no the district did this and the sixth jurisdiction in the country to do it maryland did it in 2012 and '13, virginia had to have a court order forcing them t

in the district tom sherwood, news4. >>> i'm chris lawrence at the live deck. police in montgomery county just tweeted a few minutes ago a stabbing they have been investigating in silver spring is now officially a homicide. they say a man died after someone stabbed him this afternoon near the woodlake apartment complex. now, chopper four is still live over the scene where there is still a police squad car there. officers have the suspect in custody. now, we don't know what led up to this, but right now, police say the man who was stabbed did know the person who stabbed him. again, stabbing victim outside of silver spring has now died. jim, pat, back to you. chris thank you. >>> a man found dead where someone fired gunshots did not die from gunshot wounds but it's still not clear what killed him. we are told the man got into an argument with several other men in an apartment complex here near iverson mall and temple. the man collapsed but he was not shot. police have not released the victim's name. >>> d.c. police are looking for a 17-year-old boy who hasn't bee

in the district tom sherwood, news 4. >> a lot of people probably thought they would never hear this. work to fix the transit center is a few weeks from finishing up. they are wrapping up work to strengthen beams and concrete. it is expected to be turned over in about six to eight weeks. that means if all goes well the transit center could be opening for public use late this summer or early in the fall. there have been a lot of issues with the integrity of the concrete facility. the center is years behind schedule and it's millions of dollars overbudget. >> and a fire at this townhouse complex has left several families and their pets without a home today. the blaze began in the attic of one home and quickly spread to the town homes next door. 75 firefighter worked to put this blaze out. >> neighbors are voting in several primaries right now and it's not too late for you to cast your ballot right now. just search polling place. we are live now with a closer look at some of the races. julie? >> uh-huh. as you might guess from all of these sides lined up alexandria is one of the hot spot
