. >> now, your insta-weather forecast with chief meteorologist tom tasselmyer. mix gotrday's wintry out and sunshine return across the area today. temperatures warmed up pretty nicely and the satellite imagery continues to show clear skies for now. these are not precipitation producing clouds, but high clouds that will likely spread over our region as we head for the evening. it will be a clear to partly cloudy night. it has been more of a normal day to day as far as temperatures go. 45 at the airport. 44 is normal. we are already in that slow climb out of the deep cold of winter. seven below zero on this date in february in 1934. across the region this evening, temperatures are steadily back to the low and mid-40's. chellie out west, around baltimore clear early evening and then partly cloudy. loads ranging from 23-30. this is the first son of an approaching storm, a two-part system that will come through -- the first sign of an approaching storm. we will watch this area of low pressure coming out of the southern rockies and pushing toward the texas panhandle.

. >> now, your insta-weather forecast with chief meteorologist tom tasselmyer. >> so we can just go on the desert by it. all the time. i think we had a great valentine's day, a mild one for sure. 55 degrees today at bwi marshall, 56 at the inner harbor. the storm system tracking through the region, having much -- having a hard time producing much in the way of precipitation. we are 10 or 11 degrees above the normal of 45. the warmest on record was 70 in 1990. there were four inches of snow on valentine's day in 1986. no measurable precipitation in our area yet, but it is rating at bwi marshall and it is 56 degrees there right now. 40's to the north and west of us. that is where you have to go to find the winter weather associated with today's weather system. there has been some snow tracking through this area of the mid atlantic and will continue to push to the north and east toward new england tonight. just a few sprinkles of rain early tonight and then these guys will begin to clear up toward morning. you can see that on the futurecast. in the western maryland mountains, snow is pass

. >> york 11 insta-weather plus forecast with tom tasselmyer. >> satellite imagery at 5:00 this morning shows the last of the storms of leaving. it was still overcast into new england. that is the way it looked at 5:00 a.m. for most of the day, it has been bright and sunny. that allowed temperatures to recover to normal readings. the heaviest snow was towards roanoke in the western part of virginia. 5 to 10 inches of snow came down. not much going on as far as wintry weather. another day with temperatures a little above normal. the morning temperatures were not very cold, only in the 30's. nothing on the rain gauge or snowboard. almost 10 inches 50 years ago today. 46 degrees in parkville. 46 is a big number around the baltimore area for temperatures. 45 on the coast at ocean city. tonight, clear skies. as the winds diminish, you will get some cold temperatures. 34 downtown. nationwide, we're seeing a couple storms out west. one dumped heavy snow in the pacific northwest and caused the avalanche in washington state. that system has to be watched. another one coming through the upper mid

. >>> now the weather forecast with tom tasselmyer. >> just two days ago, the temperatures and a low 70's. today, low 50's. we have shaved 20 degrees off the temperatures, and we're still 10 degrees warmer than normal. the record low, 4 degrees, 1961. on this same day, a record amount of snow, nearly 10 inches in baltimore on the third of february, 1961. that is wintertime, but not this year. we have clear skies most of the day, a look at of cloud cover approaching from the west. that will sneaky and later tonight. the wind will be calmer, temperatures dropping rapidly. dropping into the 40's around baltimore, 50 downtown, 45 eastern, western maryland at both 50's. in baltimore tonight, 25-32, mostly clear early, clouds arriving. once the high pressure moves off the coast, the clouds will rapidly increase tomorrow because the western blizzard is coming our way. 30-40 inches of snow west of denver in the mountains, 10-20 inches of snow east of the mountains and plains states. this storm will enter the eastern united states where there is not a lot of arctic cold air. a lot of the prec

. >> now, your insta-weather forecast with chief meteorologist tom tasselmyer. >> it has been such a mild winter, maybe you have forgotten just how cold it can get in baltimore in winter. we are now entering into the 113th anniversary of the worst arctic outbreak to ever hit baltimore. this is like alaskan cold, or at least north dakota poll. february 9, 1899 started a five- day stretch of bitter cold, the coldest it has ever been around here. february 10 was the coldest day on record in baltimore. the high was three and the low was seven below zero. that was in 1899. these are all records for the lowest high temperature in those days. on the 13th of february, 15.5 inches of snow came with a nor'easter rolling up the coast. it was on this day it began back in 1899. about 500,000 people live in baltimore back then. today, no arctic air in sight. the sun came back and the temperatures were in the 40's. the normal is 44 degrees, so we were close to normal. 1934 was also a bitterly cold morning on this day. 31 in randallstown, freezing in ed wooedgewood. it is cold on the coast. it will

. >> now, your insta-weather forecast with chief meteorologist tom tasselmyer. >> we did not need the kind of cloud that we put on this picture here -- a kind of plow. we got some snow to stick in a few areas. most of it was west of baltimore. parts of howard and montgomery counties, northern baltimore county, one half-inch to to 2 inches of snow in some areas. just a trace down at bwi marshall, not even enough to really measure. we got a little trace here this evening, but for the most part it was the higher elevations that got a little snow to stick in what has been almost a snowless winter so far. the highs today, it did manage to get into the 40's and cooled off in the evening. not in time to get a decent accumulation. eshelman was saying before, be on the lookout for some icy patches -- as sheldon was saying before, be on the lookout for some icy patches. the moisture could freeze up and there could be some slick spots early on. the temperatures will go down in the morning hours, but with lots of sunshine, it should warmup above normal tomorrow afternoon. a couple of icy patches

. >> now, your insta-weather forecast with chief meteorologist tom tasselmyer. >> warmer than normal mid february temperatures, there is nothing in the rain gauge and no snow on the ground. temperatures running about 10 degrees above normal. it was 77 degrees on february 15 back in 1949. 6 degrees was the record low. temperatures are still above freezing in most areas around baltimore, 45 in downtown baltimore and even western belt -- even western maryland is above freezing. a little bit of cloud cover is starting to come in from the west. the blanket of cloudiness will hold in the heat and it will be a mild warning, close to 40 downtown. sunrise on thursday morning at 6:58. there are a couple of storm systems to watch in the region, one of them just getting into the lower part of the mississippi river valley, producing strong thunderstorms on the gulf coast. behind it is another system moving quickly through the southern rockies into northern arizona. this could impact our weekend. temperatures are not that cold, even up to international falls, minnesota. it is only 30 degrees there

." >> now, your insta-weather forecast with chief meteorologist tom tasselmyer. >> second of february is groundhog day and it was an unusually mild day again. the almanac is a little deceiving because the highs occurred before dawn. it is getting colder for much of the day. the lowe's or the current temperatures, 39 at the airport, 45 downtown. the skies are gradually clearing across our region and it looks like by morning we will have mostly clear skies and much lighter winds. we are already below freezing in the far western part of the state and seeing some 30's north and west of town, dropping to the low 40's on the eastern shore. temperatures ranging from 25 in the suburbs to 35 downtown. northwest winds about 5 miles an hour, sunrise at 7:12. should be a lot of sunshine tomorrow and temperatures a little closer to normal. we will keep an eye on this big storm developing in the plains states. there are blizzard warnings and winter storm warnings from east of denver into western kansas and parts of nebraska with watches all the way out into iowa. winds gusting to 40 miles an hour,
