tom menino. >> this morning, jon keller looks at the impact he had on >> reporter:: today at 2:30, boston mayor walsh will observe a moment of silence to mark the fist anniversary of the passing of tom menino. it is a typically classy move by the mayor and recognition of how significant menino's legacy is to the city and its people. a legacy walsh is continuing in many ways. in the 12 months since his death, other cities around the country have experienced civil unrest over claims of police brutality, but in boston, when touchy situations do occur, there's a solid connection between police and the community to help ease tension. that's part of the menino legacy. other cities continue to struggle with economic blight. boston isn't quite paradise for everyone yet, but when you hear more complaints about construction-related traffic and parking problems than a lack of jobs and investments, that's good news. and that's part of the menino legacy, too. some cities suffer with mayors who are inaccessible to the press and wouldn't know a sense of humor if they fell over it. by contrast, mayor walsh is readily available and has proven he can take a joke and give one, too. that's the example menino set. other way. one year later, nen nino's passing still -- menino's passing still evokes deep regret. i had my clashes with the mayor over the years but thoroughly decades. love with his city and its people. i know i'm just one of many who miss him, the truth is, he's still with us every time we look around and reflect on what a great city boston is. if you'd like to share a memory of mayor menino, write me at caller@wbz-tv with the com -- keller@wbztv.com. >>> wind resorts is changing plans for the hotel resort in everett. wynn officials said they would be eliminating a nightclub. they would replace it with expanded convention facilities and smaller high-end lounge. the resort would also eliminate 800 parking spots. meanwhile, the city of somerville filed a legal challenge yesterday on environmental grounds. >>> 5:19 on your friday morning. straight ahead, more on the pats' big win over the dolphins. >> plus a special honor for one former pats star. why willie mcginest was honoredp. >> these ladies are homeless, and we'll take you to the local salon that's helping them feel >>> welcome back. when you leave the hair salon with a fresh hairdo? >> my mom is a hairdresser and knows what it's like to make women look and feel good. >> reporter: most of us have had what we would describe as a bad hair day but have you ever had to wash your hair in a gas station sink or go for weeks without having to wash it or cut it at all? that is the plight of many homeless women. we take to you green tangerine salon for this edition of robi on the road. [music] >> reporter: under the soothing warm water at the salon sink, most women are thinking of when the kid needs to be at soccer practice. this lady has something else on her mind. >> my husband was killed last year, and i'm going to go see my husband's grave. >> reporter: melanie can't looked in the mirror and liked who was looking back at her. what's daily life like for you? >> it's tough. i live in a shelter. it's tough. >> reporter: most of the women live in shelters. this mother and her emotionally disabled daughter have somehow survived on the street. sheila has a black eye. she says she took a fall, but her face is not the part of her appearance she's worried about. >> if your hair isn't right, i think your whole day isn't right. you know the bad hair day thing? >> reporter: the sailists at green tangerine specialize in turning around bad hair days. in this case, they do so much more. once a month, they open their doors, offer their scissors and their blow dryers and is up port to the homeless women of boston. >> i'm so grateful. >> reporter: when was the last time this woman had her hair done? >> this is my first time since i was a teenager. >> it's always nice to help people who want to help themselves. >> reporter: all of the hairdressers volunteer time and skill. they come in on their days off to make the ladies feel beautiful for free. >> it's good giving back, especially with the women who don't have much. it fills your heart and to help people out. >> sometimes when you see getting your hair done can change your life, all of a sudden, it's so cliche. it really can because you give these women a little more confidence. they feel better about themselves. >> reporter: then there's the moment when your friends notice at lunch. >> you look absolutely beautiful. >> reporter: you know what else is beautiful? these ladies are having a delicious hot meal courtesy of the women's lunch place in the back bay. elizabeth keely who runs the women's lunch place told me too often homeless women are invisible to the public. >> it's sad. they've all had lives, and they've had misfortunes that have resulted in their being here. we treat them as if they are the best, the brightest, and most beautiful because many of them are. >> reporter: these women get the chance to feel beautiful at least for one day.
