tom vacar live tonight there in humboldt county, the north coast. as tom mentioned, no stranger to strong quakes. you may remember a magnitude 6.4 that hit nearly two years ago. december 20th, 2022 to be exact. the epicenter of that quake was also near ferndale. it did kill two people and caused significant damage to the fern bridge. and you may also remember the earthquakes off cape mendocino in april of 1992. three strong quakes struck the north coast, the largest of which was a magnitude 7.2. that quake also caused a tsunami that reached the coast more than 350 people were injured as a result of that earthquake. for more on the quake, the tsunami warning, let's bring in our meteorologist, roberto gonzalez. hey, roberta. >> hi there, mike. boy, it was a very active day today, wasn't it? starting off this morning with many of us receiving the warnings on our telephones, and it was sure enough, a 7.0, i had to look twice at my phone to verify that, and we saw it hit 61 miles to the west southwest of ferndale in that yellow and orange highlighted area

tom vacar, ktvu, fox two news. >> new. at 730 tonight, three students who were on a campus shuttle at uc santa cruz when it crashed last year are now suing. it was back on december 12th, 2023, when that bus veered off the road and crashed into a rock wall. the shuttle driver was killed in the crash. three students were injured. they now are suing, claiming that the driver was negligent and that the uc regents are liable for the driver's actions. the are asking the court for past and future suffering medical expenses, as well as attorney's fees. uc santa cruz telling ktvu that this crash was a tragic and heartbreaking moment for the campus community, saying, we continue to mourn the death of our bus driver and extend our sympathy to the students who were on the bus. they did not have any comment on the lawsuit. a man convicted of stealing a small plane and then landing it on a beach has now been sentenced. the san mateo county district attorney says that 51 year old louis harris received time served and supervision from a j

ktvu tom vacar has spent almost a full day up there in the far north bay. you are now in rio dell in humboldt county. you found a road that's actually split open. tom. >> well, we said that there was not a lot of major structural damage or infrastructural damage. we meant that. we didn't mean that there was none. take a look at this. this is what is known as slide road blue slide road. and when the earthquake came, it compromised. this road to say the least. this is probably a five inch drop right here. this road will have to be repaired. now, this is not some little country road. this is one of the main roads between rio dell and ferndale, and used very often in bad weather because of flooding down in the flats. so this is a significant road here just down the road. maybe another thousand feet. there is another patch of this, not much smaller than this, but that. and then beyond that there's a rock slide that somewhat encroaches on the road. and this is just what we found in the last few minutes. so the point of all of this is that there was some significan

reporting live from novato, where it will be power back on for this neighborhood at 7:00 tom vacar ktvuox two news. >> certainly rare weather events all weekend long. tom, we appreciate your reporting live for us in the north bay. thank you. well, the u.s. coast guard reports a 100 foot barge ran aground near the berkeley marina during this weekend's big storm. you can see the large vessel there very close to the shoreline. the barge got stuck right near interstate 80, near the gilman exit in berkeley. witnesses say the barge busted loose from its moorings and got knocked around the water during the powerful windstorm, and it appears that it could have been stranded during high tide. the u.s. coast guard was able to move the stranded barge. >> yeah, a lot of nutty weather over the weekend. today's weather system followed more of what you would expect for kind of a weak weather system. moderate weather system in the north bay. they got over an inch of rain in places. the rest of us a quarter of an inch to a half inch. but compared to what we've been seeing, right, it's it was pretty mild

that could be damaging our tom vacar joining us live now from san rafael with more on how communities, especially in the north bay, are preparing after that strong storm earlier this season triggered flooding. tom. >> well, it's really interesting because right now there is not a drop of rain falling. i want to show you where we are. we're near the civic center and this is the famous pronzini set up that they do every year for generations, selling christmas trees. as you can see, the lot is already pretty soaked and it's going to get more soaked. nonetheless, people are braving the situation because it has been raining here in order to pick the tree that they want. other preparations are underway as well, but it's really interesting to point out that we've had so much of this kind of weather for so long now in terms of really heavy rains, that for a lot of people, it's a little bit on the ho-hum side, they're prepared. in fact, we talked to a battalion chief from ross and he told us this, which i thought was very fascinating. >> we're expecting kind of like the similar kind of rain an
