of state tony blinken has been closely monitoring the situation since well before the missile attack started. it's interesting to note a couple of things. first of all, the first thing antony blinken did this morning in response to this news was reiterate that israel has the united states' full support as it pursues self-defense against neighboring militia groups including iran, hezbollah, the second important thing to note, john, is that this is something -- the fact that this happened today, the way that they did is not great news for the biden administration. secretary blinken himself has said probably dozens of times over the last couple of months that iran does not perceive in its own interests to expand, widen, deepen or strengthen an assault against israel. it's something we've heard from multiple administration officials. secretary blinken is been the rally leader. he likes to talk about how the u.s. is in alignment with iran in the sense that neither country wants to see a full-scale regional war tumble out of the ongoing conflict in gaza. this, as you said, remains to be seen what kind of impact it has going for but this certainly a step not in the right directio
