tony dokoupil is in orlando where they are picking their nominee. and tony, what's the scene there?e scene is chaotic, chris. it's the biggest libertarian convention in the history of the party. about a thousand delegates here, hundreds more than in eight typical year. they're already on the ballot in 32 states. votes are being cast right here for the nominee. gary johnson, former gop governor of new mexico, is the front-runner. he's at 60%. he looks like he'll get the nomination. you mentioned that poll. he's at 10%. you might assume that 10% nationally against trump and clinton is coming mostly from disaffected republicans. but if you break it down, 6% is actually democrats. only 4% republicans. i caught up with gary johnson just a few moments ago and asked him, who is he pulling votes from. he mentioned republicans, but had more to say about hillary clinton. take a listen. >> so republicans out there, if you like donald trump, i'm your guy? >> yes. and then if you don't like hillary clinton, if you don't like the notion that, gee, a government is probably going -- not probably, i

tony dokoupil is in orlando at the libertarian party convention. say they are more revved up than in conventions past given the climate of this election season? >> reporter: i would say that, let's talk big picture for a minute. every four years somebody brings up libertarian party and it is a bit of a joke. they only had 11,000 members. they never had a significant impact. they are voting here. this is what is going on. 2:30 is the deadline. gary johnson is the front runner. if he gets 10% of the vote he will participate in a key debate tonight. this year could be different. the libertarian party is on 32 ballots already nationwide on pace to be on 50 of them. there are historic unfavorables with hillary clinton and donald trump. gary johnson, former gop governor of new mexico is polling at 10% nationally. the big question for traditional parties is who is going to be hurt more by a rising libertarian party? i caught up with governor johnson yesterday to ask him that question and he brought up donald trump and republicans in particular. take a lis

i want to get to my colleague, tony dokoupil. give us a sense, obviously this is the latest flash point in the culture wars of sorts in the united states. do we anticipate more states to fight like the state of of texas? >> i think you definitely can. and the reason why is there is an unbridgeable division between the obama administration and the ta states that want to take issue with guidance like that. the obama administration is saying that gender identity is innate. one's internal sense is innate and should be a protected category just like skin color. the lieutenant governor of texas appeared the governor of north carolina and officials in illinois and other states more and more are saying, no, it is a choice. they don't like these sorts of guidances for two reasons. one, they don't think the obama administration should be able to define what sex means and they also don't believe that gender identity, one's internal sense of whether they're a boy or girl, is something you are born with so you have arguments like the one you

tony dokoupil joins me from bowling green. you look pretty lonely out there, tony. there was a bigger crowd at tsa last night? >> that's right. kentucky has a little bit of a problem with voter turn-out. there's a law in kentucky which prevents us from being inside and filming voters, but we have been inside, because there's been very few voters coming. the timing is bad for the democratic party, because kentucky is falling on the same day as oregon. they expect about a 20% turn-out. in oregon, last time it was open, 75% of registered democrats went to the polls. so we're at the moment in the race realizing that their guy may be running out of space here to lock up the nomination. they're looking at rules and events like the primary today in kentucky and wondering, if this were open, if more states were open, if things were a little bit different, maybe our guy had a better chance. >> that's something we'll be watching for tonight. we'll see. thanks, tony. steve kornacki is at the big board with a look at what 2008 tells us about tonight. no one knows the blue grass

tony dokoupil is in bowling green, kentucky, with more, and tony, what does election look like in the bowling green? >> in the great town of bowling green, there are not a lot of people coming out to vote. if kentucky, you have to be outside a polling station, because you can't show a voter inside the voting location. but all day long, we've been inside, there's about 25, 30 voters an hour. we've been to three different locations. bowling green, this is the capital for this part of the state, but not a lot of people coming through. and we're at a baptist church. hillary clinton won conservative democrats back in 2008 here, and she did in west virginia as well. but in the most recent west virginia primary, she lost to bernie sanders overall and among the key demographic. a lot of people coming out the doors here, they're upset with the closed primary system here, but we did happen to catch up with the hillary clinton supporter who was excited to cast a ballot for her in 2016 and here's a little bit more of what he had to say. >> i think that she respect african americans and women and

msnbc's tony dokoupil and cal perry are following these primary battles for us. e of the major manufacturing hubs in the state. what are you hearing from people there? >> reporter: hey, tamron. one of the major manufacturing hubs and also here in bowling green, five precincts in this location, it's a middle school gym but we've only had 160 voters turn out so far. i could reprise my high school basketball game from the middle of this game. the secretary of state expects turnout only to be about 20% today. that is very light relative to other states. when you think about oregon, 2008 the last time there was an open democratic primary, oregon got 76% of registered democrats, so 76% versus 20%. people are asking the question online, would it be different if there were -- it was open to independents or if turnout were higher. to help us understand, this is janice, a poll worker here. 20% turnout, 160 people here so far. what's that sound like to you? >> it's a good turnout for warren county for the primary. >> that's a good turnout? >> it is. it's low, but it's always

. >> tony dokoupil is live in the suburban chicago school district where this fight first began. i know you've been digging in and talking to students and parents in the school community there, tony. what are they telling you about this fight? >> reporter: good morning, kristen. that's right, this fight began two years ago when a transgender student filed a complaint with the obama administration requesting access to the bathroom and locker room facility of her choice. it took two years to investigate the claim, but last year the obama administration said, yes, it would be a form of discrimination to prevent this kid from going to the bathroom and locker room of her choice. now, that wasn't the end of the story, however. in january, the access was granted but the community continues to be divided over it. just this month 19 girls and their parents from the school behind me, fremd high school, one of the best in the high school according to various rankings, filed a lawsuit challenging the department of education saying it's discrimination against their kids, an invasion of their c
