shery: up next, we continue our conversation with the blackstone executive chairman, tony james. including opportunities in australia. this is bloomberg. ♪ paul: you're watching "daybreak australia." we do have futures pointing higher by a little more than .1% following reasonable gains in u.s. equity markets. blackstone group struck its biggest deal so far in australia back in june, agreeing to buy over $1 billion of offices in sydney. have been in you australia, have your investment decisions changed much over time? >> sure. we bought a bunch of retail. now we have the net sellers and have moved more into logistics as australia has become more and more of an internet shopping destination, i guess. office has been sporadic. as you point out, we did the big deal, but right now, we don't see a lot of opportunity in office. earlier on, we did some residential deals. then we had a bit of a hiatus on that. now we are looking into residential deals again. it evolves to where there are opportunities. away from the trends, and some of those are global. logistics is a big trend for us ev

they ahn: we had just blackstone executive vice chairman tony james and we asked him about the repo market moves. take a listen to what he has to say because he does not think it is a systematic issue. tony: the rate spike looks very scary but it is only overnight. the actual cost to the system is not high. it is more of a concern to -- very technical. it is a technical problem, very short-term the fed's addressing. the fed wants stability. i am not surprised they stepped in here. shery ahn: is that your take of what is happening in the repo markets as well? definitely ais short-term issue. it started yesterday and continued again today. we will see that fed come in again tomorrow morning or but anytime you see -- that ticking higher, like what we saw yesterday. that's going to worry the fed a little bit. our base case is for a 25 basis point cut, but the risks have increased so we could see a larger reduction in interest reserves. the press conference, following the fed decision, what would you anticipate will be questions on th emuch expected 25 basis point reduction or some more questio

panic, or is it tony james?ve seen from money markets is the fed has lost their control to maintain a stable money market system right now. they are in the process of fixing that, but they've overshot that in terms of the number of reserves they have put into the system, and that is why we are seeing this big term spike in interest rates. repo operation yesterday. they are doing another today to try to add reserves to the system. still, markets are telling them it may not be enough. repo is still around 2.8% at the moment. a loss of control and ascending steps to get a handle of it, so you shouldn't worry too much about the broader impacts of this, assuming the fed can get true whole -- can get control. like we cani feel extrapolate something more is that they are losing control now when everything is fine. what happens when there is a crisis, and what about a budget deficit? saira: we agree generally that this is not going to be a long-term problem. the markets in general, it's another headwind. another reason
