folks like gary bower, tony perkins, for a long time, and yeah, swept up by the tea party crowd, their talking about the same things now as last year and the year before. the same issues are important now. >> well, andy, are the values voters kind of like the liberals or democrats in that they get lip service every year? people say, oh, yeah, we're going to overturn abortion any minute now, then when they get into office, guys like romney say, oh, yeah, we'll get to you later. >> totally right. these guys had the most conservative president they were going to have in a long time in bush and a lot of them feel like they didn't get a lot from him in terms of social issues. when he had a big mandate after the election, it wasn't abortion. it wasn't anything else like that. the big issue here today is don't ask don't tell. that big vote is coming up in the senate. for the most part, groups exist to go against what democrats want and against what liberal social policies and they haven't gotten a lot from republicans. >> i love they call the stuff values summit. and then their big value is l

what i found fascinating -- we saw tony perkins, family research council. back and saying, look, she's a celebrity. and trying to explain why she finished fifth in their straw poll. and you don't see her in polls among republican voters. you don't say a majority saying, yeah, she's presidential timber. they've separated her into this sort of this she is a leader, not a president. >> that's one reason i think it'd be smarter for her not to run. she's got as much influence, money, prestige she could have, which i think will only be diminished if she runs. but the event you're mentioning, which is the value voters summit where she placed last, i think, in that poll was completely dominated d pushed out of the out and pushed out of the news by her appearance in iowa. think of the money and the sort of grassroots organization around the country. she'll be able to put together it will be substantial and powerful. i do think that there will be a lot of serious republicans that will say, now wait a minute, that's a lot of sizzle, we need a little steak here and we

but this was basically, as i see it, tony perkins with the family research council. almost embracing of the wacky today, is it not. >> embracing of everybody. if you would have thought that when christine o'donnell walked out. their response was absolutely incredible, beyond anybody else who appeared and she's one of the people by the way who was moaning about the toilets and the lightbulb regulations. >> is it the first for victory and the first for power? or is it she's just their candidate? >> no i'll tell you what, both the tea party folks that were there and as well as the religious right, they smell blood in the water. it's the blood of the existing government leadership in this country. and when they both smell it, it's tinged with a little tea this year. they figure that they can overlook any of the illegitimate differences that the tea partiers may have with the religious right and do anything to win. and when i say, the differences, there are some real libertarians in the tea party movement. they don't want so-called big government replaced by big religion

so tony perkins chatted with reporters after the event and he said, quote, i think palin is a great spokesmanys what a lot of people think but a lot of people sometimes realize we shouldn't say everything we think. maybe it is that she is more of a cheerleader and one who rallies conservatives together as opposed to maybe being their top choice for president. basically echoing what eleanor has just said. what's your take on this? >> exactly. i think that's the general consensus among a lot of republicans that sarah palin seems to be more of a media personality and a celebrity more than someone who can legitimately run and win the white house. and so i mean, i think that folks who are also looking at this poll will essentially say who is this guy mike pence? because he certainly doesn't have the platform that sarah palin does. we have seen her have some real power in these primaries among ultra conservative voters. but i think the question left over from 2008 was really whether or not she was going to be able to widen her base of support and so far we haven't seen her be able to do that. if an
