. >> tony robles. >> good afternoon council members. my name is tony robles. i work with senior and disability action. we advocate for better housing, better health care and those things that would allow elders to age in place. i want to read something that was said at a recent housing rally that took place on mission street about two weeks ago. it's about a younger disabled gentleman who live in the tenderloin. he says i'm 25 and never spent a third on my income on rent. for four years, i live on ssi. in san francisco now a market rate department in the tenderloin will rent for $1500 a month. that means there's no way for people with disabilities in san francisco to live in this city without some form of public housing and public housing isn't what the city is building. we have section 8, which is a wait list and hasn't been updated in a decade. we have thousands of people on the streets and yet mayor lee says that san francisco is experiencing an exno, -- economic book. it's a crisis for san francisco resident. we need the city to focus on addressing the cri

my name is tony robles. i work with senior and disability action. we are an organization that serves seniors and people with disabilities. our primary concern among other things is housing. we work to ensure that elders can age in place. and so much has to do with health and housing. we've been working to make sure that for instance, living conditions in hotels are improved. we work to get an ordinance passed through dbi to ensure that grab bars and working phone jacks are installed in sro hotels or residences. i got a chance to speak to mr. green and miss brown who live at the residence on san bruno avenue. there are a lot of habit ability issues; leaks and problems with the windows. the windows are bolted down so if there were a fire or emergency, the fire department would have problems getting in, getting access. miss brown who is a resident there has some very significant health issues. she's a disabled elder who is trying to age in place. she has a care provider, but the health issues that she has, the habit ability issues in the residence make

. >> my name is tony robles with senior and disability action and very moved by the comments that were made. you know, really about stigma and the fact that there are inroads that are being made in the media, because the media perpetrates so much of that stigma and knowing that i think it was united press or one of the news services has made a move to remove some of that stigma by changing some of the language. we know that language creates reality and language is very powerful. so it's incumbent upon us to shape that language and to form that language so that we can have a voice and say and to the reality that is made about us and the messages that are disseminated about our community. i am also very concerned about mental health and the stigma of mental health conditions insofar as the relationship with law enforcement, because there have been many deaths, deaths that could have been prevented had there been more of a dialogue or more knowledge of the community. parents have lost children that they should not have lost, and you know, the fact that this council is here to insert their

presentation is by rosemary bosque, chief housing inspector and tony robles senior and disability action. >> good afternoon council members. >> grab bars being installed in the bathroom of residential hotels begins with the introduction in the legislation of october of last year by supervise mar and i'm happy to report that currently the property owners have been active in pulling permits to install these grab bars to minimize the amount of traumatic injury that can occur in the bathrooms and the residential hotels. there's a lot of individuals that had influence in allowing this to occur, supervisor mar had a great amount of advocacy to assist him with introducing this legislation and i'm sure tony will speak to that in a moment. the one thing i do want to indicate is that the department of building inspection felt strongly about implementing this ordinance that when it come came to the building inspection, they took a move that i haven't heard them say in many years and that is they waived the permit fees for the first 60 days to encourage the operators of residential hotels to file th
