topper shutt is commander of the weather center. >> a little quieter now. we have the severe thunderstorm watch. right now, no thunderstorm warnings, but there are flash flood warnings. we aren't going be out of the woods for a while. we have a solid line rolling through. let's start with the watch. the watch was expanded. it now includes certainly the entire metro area. fairfax, montgomery, prince georges, charles, all the way down to fredericksburg and points north and west where it's been rough all afternoon and evening. we'll look at live doppler 9,000. we have a solid line of showers and storms from 70 all the way back through leesburg, warrenton, and west of fredericksburg. this is the line of storms to go through the metro area. openfully you're home because we have been lucky inside the beltway. around town, well, not anymore. these storms are going to roll through in the next hour, hour and a half. we are looking at ashburn hitting 7:29. poolsville 7:45. crosses the river. and also over toward seneca at 7:50. this is a nasty storm. just north of ro

alert tonight as some weather moves through the area am let's get straight to chief meteorologist topper shutt. >> we still have flash floodings in effect for loudoun, prince william and fairfax county until 7:00, so about another hour. that means flooding is occurring. if you come across a flooded street, don't cross it by car or foot. big storms, we've been watching this storm move from national airport across 95 and 395 back to the north and west, rainfall rates 1 to 1 1/2 inches per hour. it's crawling off to the north and west. get ready in great falls and reston for big time rain. big time rain between dulles and chantilly. if you're going out route 50, heavy downpours are expected there and also heavy activity toward olney, aldie and upper upperville. going out 50 this has pretty big gains, perhaps as much as 1 to 1 1/2 inches per hour. these are the storms now causing some major problems, much of the metro area does have showers and storms. unlike yesterday and the day before, these storms are impacting the immediate metro area. yes, we still have storms back on i-81 and shenandoah val

chief meteorologist topper shutt is with me to answer the question. >> more bad news than good news. the same area is under a flood watch until 6:00 a.m. the storms earlier west are creeping eastward. the flood watch includes some of the same counties that got hammered last night. loudoun, jefferson, clark county, prince williams until 6:00 a.m. this is a flash-flood warning. so if you're in this area, you don't want to cross a flooded street by foot or by car. last night we saw the heaviest access of rain essentially right about here. now we're seeing a tremendous amount of heavy rain south of hagerstown back west of fredericksburg. this is the same area that got hammered earlier this evening. it has pushed off to the east a little bit. we're looking at the potential for more flooding tonight. very heavy activity between hagerstown and winchester. we'll zoom out here. this is talking about rainfall rates one to two inches per hour around winchester and charlestown. and up toward martinsburg. in some cases even a little bit more than one inch per hour. so some very heavy rainfall goi

. ♪ >>> i'm meteorologist topper shutt.re looking at the severe thunderstorms where they were yesterday. and they are few and far in between. we'll zoom in to a couple of these, going across the border up to pennsylvania. these are heavy thunderstorms. i'm not surprised that there will be a big issue here. this has hail to it. and this one is kind of straddling the border here, north of clear springs, which has a little hail in it as well, indicated by the little purple color. we'll be moving further south. this is what we have showed you about 10 minutes ago with the tremendous amount of hail. it is south of martinsburg, although it's raining pretty hard here in martinsburg and straddling i-81. it's traveling down i-81. if you know anyone traveling down there, tell them to pull over a little while. we'll zoom back out and put it into motion where these storms will go over the next hour. they will continue to move off to the south and the east side. a little similar path to what they did yesterday. they will move into jeffe
