it moves northward and rainfall shifts from being in the northwest corner of the torm. coming in with the weather features pulling it off to the north. we are expecting 5-10 inches of rain in the midatlantic and new york and metropolitan area. and western part of new england. all of these areas have had excessive rain in the past and ground is saturated and issues with flash flooding and river flooding before it is all over. craig, i am going to turn it to you. >> as we talked about the hazards, i want to key on couple of points. categories of hurricanes doesn't explain all of the rick. you deal with four principle risk with the hurricane. high winds, storm surge and they are tied to the center of circulation and bill talked about rainfall and tornados, they are not tied to the category storm. it may be a category one hurricane rainfall amounts is not tied to the storm. it is due to the size and speed of the storms. other thing, tornados are quick. bill said they will not be on the ground and the type of tornados we saw this spring but they are devastating. we ask peopl

reporter: that's correct. 64 ships were ordered to move out of virginia saying they could weather the torm better out at sea. spencer christian is here tracking irene. where is th hurricane at this hour? >> lairry, -ulary it is a category three hurricane and moving out of the northern bahamas and caribbean and back in the warm waters of the south atlantic. it is expected to trek northwest and along the atlantic coast as a category three hurricane still. and maintains the current path it will hit cape patters and saturday morning at 11:00. and continue northward and hit new york city area sunday morning as a category one hurricane. it would be unusual. last time a hurricane passed directly over new york city was in 1821. and the last time hurricane passed over long island was in 1938. and as you order in the report hurricane bob brushed the tip of long island in 1991. but that is not a direct hit. it would be unusual. southeasternitates have much -- southeastern states have much more hits. there is a question of storm surge that take place in the eastern and northeastern part of the storm.

the torms storm is moving away from puerto rico. through the bahamas and look out florida in the southeast of the united states. because this isn't going to take a track over land for that much, we will see it strengthening in the days ahead. by the time we get near florida, it could be a category 2 hurricane. so all of a sudden, we're talking serious business and potential for serious damage and power outages, all of florida and possibly the southeast. it's difficult to tell who could get the landfall. today is a gorgeous day in new england. finally, dry weather. watch out in new england. that hurricane is going to bring a ton of rain to you over this next labor day weekend, especially sunday and monday. keep that in the back of your mind nor the upcoming plans. deep texas, 104 in dallas. 102 in san antonio. you're watching "morning joe."
