nearly six years after that deadly crash near the fort totten station. megan mcgrath has a look at what the passengers can expect this morning. good morning to you. >> reporter: well, good morning. it was back in 2009 that that deadly accident occurred metro train slammed into another train that was stopped near the fort totten station. nine people were killed. many more were injured and following that accident metro stopped using their automated computer system. they went over to manual controls. well, since that accident metro has been making lots of safety improvements and they're at the point that they can return to the automated system and that's happening on the red line beginning this morning. at in fact it's already begun with the longer trains along the red line. so there will still be a person inside the cab to open and close the door and make announcements, but everything else is being done by a compute system. going to the automated system going back to it will make for faster rides and you might also see some of the jerkiness that you see wi

[no audio] rich: here along the red line a big high-tech step in metro safety. >> reliability. it's representative of an increase in safety. rich: starting monday the red line will return to automatic train operation or a.t.o. for short. like an adapt active cruise control for a car. it will control the train's speed, braking and sensing devices. >> you have a human being to keep everybody calm. people are less anxious if they see a human being. rich: it's part of the plan to imply with ntsb rules in the wake of the red line crash that killed eight people. >> we won't have trains lagging and it's a smoother acceleration. rich: all this as metro board members face the choice of expanding the rail system or fixing what's in place. >> but the reality in our region is we do need some expansion. rich: that means eight car trains. the cost $1.5 billion for the entire system or $700 million or about half that 220 cars. >> you've never heard transportation saying wait, let's stop building new

jummy: right now metro working to fix a track problem outside of fort totten. it caused them to suspend the service between prince george's plaza and georgia avenue. riders had to use shuttle buses or take a detour on the red line. delays are reported in both directions. trains are single tracking. service on the green line has been restored this noon after a pedestrian bridge fell on to the tracks in berwyn heights yesterday. this is what it looked like yesterday. we brought you that breaking news after a crane struck that bridge just before rush hour. now, it sent part of the span crashing on to the commuter tracks. luckily, no one was on the bridge and no trains were in the area at the time. metro says crews worked through the night on repairs. and marc commuter trains are now operating full service on the camden line but officials say there could still be delays in the greenbelt area. an update now on january's deadly metro incident near l'enfant plaza. metro says it will begin upgrading radio and cell phone systems inside tunnels in january. a recent study

back in 2009, a metro train slammed into another train stopped on the tracks near the fort totten station. nine people were killed and many more were injured. after that accident, metro stopped using their automated system and began to control their trains manually. since the accident a number of things have been done a number of safety improvements have been made and metro is now at the point where they can return to that automated system and they did that this morning. a computer will now control the trains speed them up slow them down and stop them. this is only happening on the red line with the longer eight-car trains and they began this morning. six-car trains the still need a software upgrade and they'll be put on the automated system at a later date. metro says going back to the automated system is more efficient and makes for faster rides, smoother erer rides. you might not see the grab byness or jerkiness under the manual system. it got under way this morning, the lines on the automated system by some point in 2017. from the grosvenor station, megan mcgrath news 4. >> reporter:
