the first stop on our tour today's good to be the dixie grill. wilmington has played host to a lot of the sitting letters over the years and one of our most notable is to eliminate arthur miller. you might've heard of him. he won the pulitzer prize and is probably one of his most famous place was the crucible. we know arthur miller came to wilmington at least twice. the first time when we came to to wilmington was during the 1930s. he and tennessee williams both went to university of michigan by writing program at the both got jobs working for the works progress administration, federal arts of administration during the depression. tennessee being tennessee decide he would head off on a bicycle and the venture, but arthur miller has been very arthur miller like new england and strain, i signed up for something and do it. he toured up and an east coast collecting folklore that was later archived in washington. one of the things they were specifically looking for was to collect oral history from people i been alive during slavery. in the 1930s you c

the next stop on the tour is first presbyterian church. we are on 3rd street which is one of the major thorough fairs in wilmington. you are probably wonder why with are we stopping at first presbyterian church on a literary walking history tour. well, the answer is preacher skin. you are probably surprised by that answer. 1874-1882, first presbyterian church minister had a son named woodrow wilson who went on to become the 28th president of the united states. most of the time his father was minister he was away at school. first at davidson college, got sick, with drew from school and came home to live with the family while recouperating and reenrolled at john hopkins university and met another man man from north carolina named thomas dixon. thomas dixon dit a -- did a lot of things and one of them is wrote senational love stories. you don't remember them from the books but because those two books became birth of a nation and the first film screened at the white house. thomas called woodrow and said i made a movie and he said come over and

coming up, we will go inside and take a tour of their "cape fear stories" exhibit. the cape fear region is the southernmost coastal region of north carolina. it is called cape fear because when boats were approaching there were a lot of shoals and it was difficult to get into, so it was a fearful place to land, at least that is what most historians thing. wilmington is the main city in north hanover county. the exhibit is called "cape fear stories." it explores the history of wilmington and north hanover county from the earliest inhabitants of to the 20th century. here, some came people described it as an ocean of trees, majestic, tall trees, and these became the bedrock of the region's economy. the trees are called longleaf pines. you can still see them today, but they used to cover a huge united states. they have these long pine needles, big pinecones, totally different than anything you would have seen in england if you are coming here from europe. resource for lumber, turpentine, and tar. people came to the cape fear in the early part of the american colonial pe
