joining me is cnn national security contributor fran townsend who is also an external board adviser toch. what do you make of the case? >> well, suzanne, going back to the 1990s there was the wendel key case where he was alleged to give restricted data to china, but this data that the couple were trying to pass were the most secret and the most important secrets that we have in the nuclear program, so there is a tremendous effort since that wen lee ho case, to monitor those who have access through informants and try to identify the spies before they are able to pass the information, and it sounds like what we know so far, the fbi took it seriously, and by the way, the electromagnetic pulse tract is one of the things greatest feared by the government, and you can imagine launching an attack and wipe out the electrical grid in urban area, and the sort of chaos that would cause. i think that this is the sort of thing, and it also sends a deterrent signal of others who think about misusing their access to this sort of information. >> fran, how difficult to prosecute these cases? >> well, i

let's talk about that with fran townsend.ia and the homeland security department. two hikers remain in iranian jails. ahamadinejad says he wants iranians released from american prisons. are there iranians in american prisons right now? >> you know, wolf, as you appreciate, under our constitution, if iranians are arrested here in the united states, they have access to an independent lawyer. they can confront the witnesses and evidence against them, they're entitled to ask for bail, they're entitled to have contact with their consular officials and representatives here in the united states. a whole series of rights that americans don't seem to be granted when they're taken into custody in iran. and so it's understandable that he might raise the -- the u.s. having in custody iranian citizens, but it's by no means fair to -- to make the analogy to americans like these two hikers, not to mention remember there's also robert levenson, a retired fbi official, who did appeared. he's never even been acknowledged by the iranian governm

let's bring in our cnn political analyst david gergen and cnn national security contributor fran townsend, fran is also an external board adviser to both the cia and the homeland security department. he makes these allegations, david. how's the west with, how is the united states supposed to respond to this? >> walking out's the best way. and keeping these sanctions on and tightening them if possible much the good news is, wolf, that the sanctions seem to be biting a little more than they have in the past. this is the fourth round, of course, but there have been some additional sanctions put on by the united states and european nations. russia seems more on board with them. but there's no resolution. we have still got this mad man running iran. almost impossible to deal w and some point, the world is going to start to ask how much longer is the diplomacy going to go on and when are we really going to get tough? >> the sad thing, fran, as you well know there are a lot of people out there around the world who do believe that the united states had some sort of role in a conspiracy that led t
