meanwhile, another major car recall, this time from toyota. the japanese automaker is recalling 6.4 million cars worldwide. it makes it one of the biggest recalls to date in the car industry. toyota needs to fix faults in the steering column and seats. though it's unknown if this is a design or manufacturing issue. the recall came out just before the market closed in tokyo. and sent shares lower by more than 3% in that time. we are joined on the phone from tokyo. how does this compare to the recall we had -- big recall we had last time from toyota? >> well, it is large. and this is the second largest recall on a single day that toyota has made. the largest since october 2012. so the scale of the recall is extremely large. but you also have to remember that since then, most manufacturers have been extremely diligent, conservative almost in the pace of their recalls. the scale of the recalls have tended to be larger arather than smaller. having said that, this is a wide-ranging recall that seems to cover many, many issues, including as you menti

we've been on several times discussing big recalls from toyota. goes back to that period of massively overrapid expansion of toyota from 2002 through to 2009 where they themselves said they put growth ahead of quality. that then led to all sorts of quality issues. the big problems they had in 2009 came with ak sexcceleratoa. in the last two years 25 million cars recalled. in this case they're dealing with it very well. they've identified a problem or problems and fixes. i think consumers will be forgiving. the question is, how many more of these are there to come? >> absolutely. you say they're handling it very well. you and i have talked over the last couple of years about toyota's handling of recalls. if you compare it to general motors, gm, you know, kind of in trouble for dragging its feet on recalling, i think, 1.5 million cars with a problem that had been linked to 13 deaths, here no deaths or injuries for these particular problems for toyota. some may say is toyota being too careful at the expense of its bottom line? >> i don't think so. ul

"i don't think it's a coincidence that we're seeing a number of safety or safety- related recalls." analysts say the scrutiny of general motors has put more pressure on automakers to find defects. "putting more resources behind it--absoslutely. if they aren't doing that, they're nuts." this week, volkwagen ordered dealers to stop selling passats with newer 1.8 liter engines, because of oil leaks that could start a fire. also, vw is recalling cars with headlights that could go dark if the hood is slammed shut. "obviously both are made in chattanooga and so it's incumbant that managers there make sure they're producuing a safe product." also, analysts say automakers may order recalls now hoping that g-m's high-profile recall overshadows problems elswhere. this time toyota recalling more than 6 million vehicles worldwide.is means more than 10 million cars have been recalled just this year. phil lebeau, what is going on with all these car recalls. when one part goes bad, a whole bunch of vehicles were being recalled. that's what happened when toyota out of japan announced a worldwide recall totalling 6.7 million vehicles. we saw recalls, because there's actually a couple of them here. 27 models, we're not going to run down all of them, the corolla, highlander, almost all the popular models are involved in some fakes. they were made between 2004 and 2013. these recalls from toyota involve potential faulty air bags, seat rails, steering issues. there's a host of potential problems there, but we should point out that toyota says of no known accidents or deaths surrounding the recalls. and keep in mind, despite the recalls that have been announced by toyota today, what's going on with general motors and its recall of 2.5 million vehicles, auto sales have been picketing up. they're expected to be up about 5
