it isn't the version of tpp. the status quo is a high level of trade, but with respect to the actual data, while we have heard what the talking points are the benefits, in fact, even when we were having domestic growth, we had income and equality increasing and medium wages decreasing now as you know as 1970's levels but that happened before the crisis that has happened over 20 years of the world trade organization in 1/2 that, as we have watched out 5.3 million u.s. manufacturing jobs in 18 years. for the 2,000 factories department of labor says an average, the u.s. worker loses $8,000 when they go from the manufacturing job to a service job, that is the lived experience, which is why you have most members in congress who have said they won't give fast track, trade promotion authority, which basically handcuffs the ability to make sure the agreements work. why? it's not that they are against trade, they just don't want nafta on steroids with the pacific rim. they want different terms are they get the benefits of

opposition to the tpp is also fierce in japan.ly farmers rallied at a tokyo park during biden's visit. they say a deal would be a major blow to japan's aging farming community. if this deal passes, it would be the largest free trade agreement in american history besides the united states. japan, the tpp negotiating nations include australia, brunei, canada, chile, malaysia, new zealand, peru, singapore, and vietnam. and most recently south korea expressed its interest in joining the tpp talks. this trade partnership is dangerous for american workers. i think it's a job killer and there is really no upside for american workers. and i think i have to fairly point out that i think that this white house has been inept when it comes to explaining to the american people and to american workers where's the upside. leo gerard is the president of the united steel workers of america. there are some members of congress i believe 160 democrats and some republicans who have signed on to a letter to the president saying this is a bad deal. does

third, we can use tpp as a vehicle to enhance nafta disciplines. canada, mexico and the u.s., as carla pointed out, are all parties to tpp which will involve deeper liberalization in areas including services, investment, competition policy, ip and a range of 21st century issues. where tpp imposes a higher standard, i think it should be the governing discipline in north america. where tpp conflicts with nafta but does not impose a higher standard, the nafta party should negotiate as needed to resolve the conflict. but this approach would make it only to dramatically improve upon the nafta while maintaining its primacy in north america. and fourth, we can use ttip as a potential template for enhanced talks among nafta countries. to a certain extent, of course, regulatory talks are underway in the forums that have been created. but ttip can provide a much more robust example and provide a means, a template for accelerating and deepening regulatory reform. so these four strategies -- targeted solutions, chapter by chapter improvements, tpp and ttip --

tpp is a longer-term proposition . it is extremely difficult. there are a number of mutual recognition agreements with europe. and i can tell you, from personal experience, it is very hard. regimes in they u.s. and europe are very dedicated to their regulations and the bureaucracies that build up around those is very substantial. each side believes it is right. i am not saying it is not possible. it is possible. but i think it is a longer-term proposition. it will be longer for the tpp. a predictionake about what the pace of negotiations will be. i wanted to say something about the utility, the relative utility of the agreement. one of the things that was a challenge for the nafta was bringing the countries together. mexico really had to conduct a lot of reform, and really had to work very hard in order to meet the requirements in nafta. looking at the transpacific partnership, we have a lot of countries involved. they each have a different position on what they think is important. in terms of the north american nafta issues that are manageable

tpp talks hit a road block after japan failed to make concessions for the u.s. but on the bright side, the nikkei has surged over 50% this year, making it one of the best performing equity markets globally. back to you. >> joining me now for the full hour of "worldwide exchange" is jeffrey view, strategist at fbx. did you have a good christmas? >> yes, thank you. >> clearly ending the year with a bang, just below 105. 1.2%, core cpi, we're halfway there, aren't we? >> if you look at the overall performance of abe-nomics related asset classes, people will say it has been a success. but if you look at the structural reform, it seems like people are not making adju adjustments on it. so long as dollar/yen is higher, the nikkei is going up. at some point, though, people are going to ask questions about how you follow through and at what point does this former inflation become more pernicious. you can print your way to 3%, 10% inflation if you wanted to, but is that the road japan wants to go down upon? and we are in favor of being long dollar/yen still. we are cauti

but now cast this reform within the tpp that's being negotiated and some of the free trade discussions. >> well, i think for the more mexico grows as an exporter probably in oil -- gas may have a more de domestic market, the more value there is in tpp. united states is in a slightly different position. for us the ability to export gas, given the enormous amount of gas we have, the potential to export lng and the relatively low prices, that gives us basically a bargaining chip to use for both of those trade negotiations which we didn't have before. so it's indispensable for us. i think mexico would be a collateral beneficiary of that. i'm not so certain that mexico is going to become an lng exporter in the next 10 to 15 years given the incredible amount of domestic demand and relatively low price of gas right now. i'm not so sure it's as big a deal for mexico in those trade agreements as it is for us. >> do you want to add a mexican view of the bilateral relation? >> i agree that the first objective with a reform of this sort is to have enough oil, natural gas, petrochemicals produced i

groups which the administration is doing is the best buffer against china, hopefully over time its tpp trade promotion agreement -- >> if i can just get back to afghanistan for a moment. there was an article in the paper today, at the same time, at the same time he's condemning the u.s. for inadvertently killing some afghan civilians in one of their villages, there was a terrible slaughter by the taliban and boo from president karzai. what does that tell you? >> well -- it is an uncertain trumpet because he has an uncertain constituency. the fact is, we're in the 13th year in the longest war in american history and he really force the country, particularly congress, to stand up and ratify staying there, particularly if our troops are, a, minimal, and b, under rules of engagement that make their function, they're bad or dangerous, then we'll find out how ready we are to turn our back and leave. >> -- mentioned the show, showtime, karzai's behavior reminds me of one of my favorite movies "blazing saddle" where a character holds a gun to his own head and says stop or i'll shoot. unless th

i would not say that, but that is an important part of tpp and one that i think needs to be watched very, very carefully. washington, and auto regulator david strickland announced he is stepping down. what is your assessment of his well, i think our cars are nothing but safer, and i think that transcends political party or administration. i think he did a fine job. >> any idea where he is going to land next? he is going tonk come to general motors to work. he did aid, i think fine job, and i think he has got a career -- i have met him on occasion, but i do not know him personally. service, quite frankly, is unappreciated in this country, and there are public servants that do great i highly appreciate it, and i think he did a good job. what about the future of electric vehicles in the u.s. market? sales have not been what gm wants. you are still in that market. see a electric vehicles going, both for gm and for the u.s. market, more broadly? >> because i know the press loves to make a on this, and certain people at this table do. i do. the volt, we will sell more than jaguar will sell car

how can obama and biden be on the side of the tpp? the transpacific partnership. huge trade deal, if you didn't know what that was. in fact, it is a trade deal that is going to dwarf nafta and gat, no question about it. to answer the question directly, it's a mystery to me. but what's troublesome is that the administration has not explained to the american people just how this is going to be good for american workers and how it's going to create jobs in our economy. okay, so we're going to trade with other countries. but there's also clauses in there that deal with international tribunals that will circumvent american law when it comes to trade and the grievance process is pretty gummed up, as i understand it. also, this is an attack on american labor. it's an outsourcing on steroids agreement. and none of the trade agreements we've had have been productive when it comes to jobs. i'm curious about this. it's a mystery to me. and i wish the president would step up and explain exactly what the benefits are of this to the middle class in this country. our next questi
