tracee wilkins live with an update. hey, tracee. >> reporter: good morning. as we've been saying all day, the first miner came up 11:15 our time. p.m., last night. folks were out as early as 6:00 in the evening. they were watching. some of them with tension and worry, was this going to work. it was kind of like a party going on here in northwest. there was celebration last night outside the chilean embassy in northwest as many gathered to watch the rescues together on a large screen television. it was set up right on massachusetts avenue. for more than two months, these people watched with the rest of the wrld as 33 miners survid, trapped underground. and as the rescue effort began there were moments of silence and almost tension. the missile-like capsule sent half a mile underground through a hand-sized opening really work? >> you never know how is it going to work. but it did work and it waso, so happy. >> reporter: after the first few rescues were successful, ts was the scene. time for champagne, song and dance as these folks put the energy back home to a

tracee wilkins live in northwest. back to you. >>> thank you. one man is dead this morning after being struck by a car in northern virginia. police say he was crossing dumfries road in dumfries as he was walking towards a busy commuter lot. megan mcgrath joins us from dumfries this morning with details of that. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, barbara. just a short time ago police opened all of the lanes on dumfries road, the southbound lanes had been closed for hours since this accident hpened very early this morning. it was right around 6:30 in the morning. still dark. there were a lot of commuters that were here coming to this commuter lot. one of those commuters actually cross ee eed dumfries road to g something to eat and come back. the dumfries road commuter lot is a busy spot many people park across the road to the mcdonald's and return to the lot to either get in the slug line or catch the bus. police say a 38-year-old man was doing just that. but as he crossed back over dumfries road he was struck and

news 4's tracee wilkins has more from rivdale on what led to the serious crash. >> reporter: traffic signs have been rolled over and are now lying in this yard next to a fire hydrt. it was a violent scene left over from an accident that happened this morning in riverdale. police say it all started at a nearby rtaurant and then ended here. riverdale police s their officers were pursuing a woman on foot in connection to some kind of a theft involving a cell phone. they say the wan borrowed someone's phone and wouldn't give it back. what started as something petty turned much more serious. police say the woman made it into a car with another woman inside. the two took off from kennel worth avenue to east/west highway. a riverdale police spokesman say by the time the police officers were able to get in the own cruiser and catch up to the two women, they had crashed here at the intersection of east/west highway and route 1. both women had been ejected from the car, according to police. both were transported to the hospital in critical condition. prince george's county police are now in ch
