tracee wilkins joins us live from the station with the overnight developments. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. yeah, good news for commuters, metro officials say that both the orange and blue lines are up and running and saying that folks should have no issues after this derailment that happened at rosslyn station. they've been working all night long. let me show what it looked like yesterday, though. metro says that at 7:00 p.m., they had a train, a franconia/springfield blue line train, derail as it was leaving rosslyn station. metro officials are calling the derailment minor. they say one test wheels on the first car of the train came off the track. 1,000 passengers were offloaded. there were no injuries reported. they had to single track throughout the night. metro crews successfully rerailed the wheels of that train that came off the tracks. metro spokespeople say this morning riders will not have any issues today. >> before we made the declaration that normal blue or orange line service would be restored, not only did we go in and analyze all of t

news4's tracee wilkins is live there. how are thing looking? looking really bad. and you're right, with that hog at 2 -- with this happening at 2:00 a.m. is, you'd think thing would be better but they're not. past new hampshire avenue, looking at backups. traffic moving oh, so slowly. on the other side of 29, you can see why it's happening. they have two lanes getting by as you get closer to the accident scene here just beyond 29. because of that, traffic is really, really slowing down. at some point, they're probably going to have to close these lanes to get all of the vehicles out of the way. so they're definitely not done with the problems we've had here on the outer loop. let me show you what it looked like earlier this morning after the accident first happened. maryland state police say that this was a fatal accident involving a tractor-trailer and at least two other vehicles. they are still investigating, and of course also cleaning up the beltway and trying to get all of the lanes open so that traffic can get by. what we've been saying a

news4's tracee wilkins has the latest. good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning. police are still investigating exactly what happened here. let me show you this unbelievable sight. a vehicle in the reflecting pool here outside of the capitol building. this is what police say happened. they say that they tried to pull this car over for a routine traffic stop when the driver took off. they lost sight of the driver, caught up with him, and found him here in the reflecting pool. there were two people in the car. they got out of the car and took off on foot. d.c. police were able to catch the two men, took them into custody. we also understand that a weapon was also received here or found here on the scene by d.c. police inside of that vehicle, and that they now have that, as well. so two people taken into custody, running from police and crashed their vehicle into the reflecting pool. the investigation is beginning into, again, what was going on with these guys and what they were doing with a weapon in their vehicle. reporting live from northwest, news4. >> thank you.

tracee wilkins is live in northwest washington now with more on the driver and the route that he last worked. good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning. yeah, this driver had just gotten back from vacation. and on friday apparently was sick. so yes, metro's taken plenty of precautions. they want to make sure that folks who were on his bus are aware of the fact that this driver is sick. so let's look at his route so that folks can know for sure. metro officials say that on friday at 7:13 a.m., he started his route at 14th and buchanan here at the station, at the bus depot, and drove to l'enfant plaza to 14th and colorado, to l'enfant and northwest. the driver has been diagnosed with viral meningitis, the bus has been taken out of commission. metro does not believe that that employee had exposure to any other vehicle prior to his morning shift friday. but the employee, because he had been on vacation. metro has disinfected all 164 buses at the bus lot here at 14th and buchanan anyway, just in case. viral meningitis is not as severe as some forms of meningitis. but at its worst, men

news4's tracee wilkins is live on the scene with more on the situation. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. we're here on 29 because this was as close as we could actually get to the accident. let me show you a couple of things. first of all, from this vantage point to our right, you can see just how backed up traffic is on the beltway through the trees there. those lights standing still, that's the problem. we have -- what has to be more than two miles of backups. we've been driving back and forth all morning and taking a look at it. and folks are just not moving or at least they weren't moving until just a little while ago. now this is the good news. these are the vehicles that have been turned around off of the outer loop of the beltway and are now making their way on to 29. so this means that there's some movement down there on the beltway. and some cars are able to get by. that's the good news. let me show you what it looks like down there on the beltway right now. what's going on with that accident. this was a horrible accident. multiple vehicl

in hyattsville, i'm tracee wilkins, news4. >>> this morning, george zimmerman is behind bars, a place his attorneys say is safer right now than if he were free on the streets. zimmerman had his first court appearance yesterday on a second-degree murder charge in the death of trayvon martin. his attorney won't ask the judge for a bond hearing until he can find someplace safe for zimmerman to stay. a probable cause affidavit filed by prosecutors claims that zimmerman profiled martin because he was black, chased him and then shot him in the chest after a struggle. zimmerman maintains he shot martin in self-defense. he'll be back in court at the end of may. >>> meanwhile, trayvon martin's mother is clarifying some comments she made during yesterday's interview with the "today show." when asked what she would say if she could talk to zimmerman, she said that she seemed to suggest that she thought the shooting was an accident. listen. >> i believe it was an accident. i believe that -- it just got out of control. and he couldn't turn the clock back. >> fulton is now clarifying comments, sayi

news4's tracee wilkins is on the scene with more. >> reporter: d.c. police say they were called to this neighborhood for the report of a man found unconscious, when they arrived what they found was a man beaten to death in this alley. and are now searching for any information they can find to help close this case. when people who knew the victim heard about what happened overnight, they rushed to the scene. police say a 36-year-old man was beaten to death in an alley on 16th street near the corner of oates street and trinidad. this man who did not want to be identified said he knew the victim. >> he had a troubled life. and i mean, you know, it's the way things go around here. >> d.c. police say they were called to the neighborhood just before midnight for the report of an unconscious man. when they arrived, they found the victim suffering from what police called blunt-force trauma, including reported injuries to his head. he was pronounced dead at the hospital. just a few years ago, the trinidad neighborhood experienced a crime wave so extreme that t

. news4's tracee wilkins has more on the scare from northwest washington. >> reporter: that bus driver started his day here at the bus depot at buchanan and 14th streets in northwest and began the rest of his route. metro officials want to make sure that folks on the bus that day are well aware of where he went and that there is a possibility that they, too, may be sick. phyllis bell rides the 52 route in the morning, regularly. she believes she was on the bus this past friday with the driver who has been diagnosed with viral meningitis. how did the driver seem, did he seem sick to you? did he seem okay? >> no, not at all. >> reporter: metro officials say they've taken his bus out of the fleet and rest of the buses at the lot at buchanan and 14th streets northwest have been sanitized. as a precaution, metro wants customers who ride the morning 52 or 54 route to be aware. metro officials say on friday, the infected bus driver drove route 52 at 7:13 a.m. from 14th and buchanan streets in northwest to la 'enfant plaza. and then he returned to route 52. at 9:00 a.m. he took a trip from 14t

news4's tracee wilkins has the latest the investigation from silver spring. >> reporter: this was the scene on the outer loop of the beltway all morning long. traffic backed up for miles as police investigated and tried to clean up a major fatal accident. around 2:00 a.m. this morning, on wet and slick roads, two cars and a tractor trailer collided on the beltway. maryland state police say one person was killed and four others were transported to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries. the cause of the crash is still under investigation. but the effects of it were clear. the outer loop was shut down until just before 6:00 a.m. traffic was diverted off the bell way and on to colesville road. cars stuck between the accident scene and the exit had to be turned around and redirected on colesville road. a few lanes were reopened by 6:00 a.m. but traffic was still backed up for miles. and not just on the beltway. but on roads feeding into the beltway like route 29. >> no good, no good. we were already running late. >> reporter: have you noticed it take longer this morning? >> defin

news4's tracee wilkins has more on the investigation. >> reporter: hours after this whole thing unfolded, the city of alexandria police department is still camped out in froth of the building where these women were attacked. and it's a good thing. because this morning, a neighbor thought he spotted the suspect nearby. early this morning, our cameras rolled as a man walking his dog with alexandria police, he and some other neighbors saw a suspicious man hanging around the building. where two women were attacked yesterday. because he is is a potential witness, we are protecting his identity. >> we saw a guy fitting the description walking down here along the edge of the field. he got to the corner, looked like he saw the police car and turned around and walked away quickly. he came back and was walking out here kind of strangely, looking around. >> the alexandria officer took off running towards eisenhower avenue metro station where the man was. he was handcuffed and placed in a squad car. after about 30 minutes of questioning, police took the man's picture and released him. alexandria pol

that is where news4's tracee wilkins joins us live this morning with more on this investigation. >> reportergood morning, aaron. what makes this an even stranger situation is that the alexandria police department actually uses this abandoned building for training. so they know it well. and it helped them as they were looking for their suspect yesterday. as you see here, outside the building they still have an officer standing by hours after this unfolded. paying attention to what's happening around the building. police searched this abandoned building for three hours last night looking for the suspect. they say he got out of the building. this place is just around the corner from the alexandria police department and near the jail here, as well. police say two women told them that they were responding to an internet ad for an apartment in this building. this is actually an abandoned office building. but they say that when they got here, the suspect attacked them, forced them into the building, and began hitting them. the women were able to fight back and escape. they've called for help. with
