"news 4's" tracee wilkins is live with more. tracee, good morning. >> good morning, eun. man who loved music so much. chuck brown's go-go captured everything about music, it had funk, jazz, blues. he introduced all kinds of genres through the go-go sounds. now there is a void here. some folks came out last night to celebrate the life and legacy of chuck brown. they were playing chuck brown's music as folks gathered in the streets. his daughter also came down to greet the fans and say hello. it's fitting there was a tribute to chuck brown here last night. first of all, we're just down the street from chuck brown way, a street named in his honor. and he also had to cancel a rye cent performance due to his illness, let fans know how serious that was. that was. something he ever did. it was also significant because he foutd to try to keep the howard theater open in the '80s. he wanted to keep it as a go-go venue, but as we know, it closed for some time. it was for the people brks i the people. chuck brown explained how he feels about the creation of go go and its growth. >> i

news4's tracee wilkins live with the latest details for us. bring us up to speed. >> reporter: well, this is how it all happened. evidently a family member of this 10-year-old girl pulled up here to the sixth district police station, and the 10-year-old girl had been shot. now, police got her out of the vehicle, transported her to the hospital. she was shot in the lower body. they do believe that she's going to be okay. we have reports from police that this child was shot while inside of the truck. now, we counted at least two bullet holes in the back of the truck there. aimed at the back passenger area. and we are assuming that that's where this young girl was sitting when this all happened. now this happened at new york avenue and fenwick street in northeast, which is quite a ways from here. but the family member drove the truck here to the sixth district police station for some reason. and brought the child here. now police are investigating exactly what happened. but because of where this shooting happened, this is divided now between two

tracee wilkins with more. good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning, eun. the person who's in the hospital is the man who was walking his dog. and the person who -- sorry, the person who died in this incident is the man who was walking his dog. the person who's in the hospital is a police officer who was shot during this incident. now, there are a lot of gaps in between exactly what caused all of this to go down the way it did. and that's part of what police are still here investigating here on 6th street in southeast. trying to figure out what led to the police-involved shooting. now, this is how police describe this incident. let me show you what it looked like earlier on the scene. they say that at 10:30, they received a call for a man here in this neighborhood with a gun. someone gave the description of a black male who was bald walking two dogs. when officers arrived on the scene, they saw an individual who matched that description. when they confronted the individual, that's when they say that that man pulled a weapon and fired, striking one of the of

tracee wilkins is live at the scene. >> reporter: good morning. we just drove three miles from the sixth district police station where that young girl was taken after the shooting. this is where she was actually shots, according to police, at the intersection of new york avenue and fenwick street. now, this is in the fifth district. this is why the fifth district police will be handling this end of the investigation. let me show you what it looked like a while ago over there. at the 6th district police station, they're saying this happened at 3:30 this morning. now this is where that white pickup truck ended up with at least two bullet holes that we could count. police tell us a family member brought that 10-year-old girl there after she was shot in the lower body. she was inside of the truck when it willed. again -- when it happened. again, it happened here at new york avenue and fenwick. this is where she was shot. that's where the family member took her. so now police are investigating. fifth district police will be handling the shooting scene.

i'm tracee wilkins reporting live this morning. back to you all in the studio. >> thank you. >>> new from overnight, police are searching for the three men who stole a car in college park. this happened just before 11:30 at the intersection of princeton avenue and hartwick road. police say a 35-year-old man was about to get into his lexus when the men approached him. they say the suspects beat and robbed the man before taking his car. the car was later found in wheaton. police are not releasing any of the details at this time. the victim is expected to make a full recovery. >>> this morning, we know more about the man stabbed to death in northeast -- northwest d.c. that we brought you breaking news about yesterday morning. police say 33-year-old dwayne brisbane worked as a cat scan technician at washington hospital center and had been celebrating a promotion. they say he was stabbed in an altercation on florida avenue on his way home from a u street bar. he reportedly tried to drive himself to the hospital but crashed. >>> a new po

that's where "news 4's" tracee wilkins joining us live with more. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. the doors are open to the public at 10:00 a.m. but they're closing doors when they reach the capacity of 14,500. no one has to imagine that that is very possible considering the fact that we saw thousands of people gathered outside howard theater on tuesday waiting to pay their respecting to chuck brown at the public viewing. people stood all day long, at times in the rain, to pay their respects to "the godfather" of go-go. today they can expect the funeral service to begin with a very traditional feel. there'll be appearances by city leaders and entertainers including -- more are expected to be announced. but before the close of service, there will be a live performance of a medley of brown's music. now, donnie simpson will serve as host. there will be special performances by the chuck brown band by sugar bear, maysa, james funk and others. when they reach capacity, they will shut doors and not allow anyone else in the public inside. folks who

"news 4" tracee wilkins is live on the front mall. good morning, tracee, how is it looking today? >> reporter: well, it's cloudy out here today, but when they redo the mall, it's going to be like a whole new world out here and i know there are a lot of folks sitting on the edge of their seats because people have an opportunity to weigh in on some of these selections and actually see what the architects have submitted and help decide which ones would work best for the mall. so this is a very exciting time. let's take a look at the winning designs. the jury selected olin & world series menofretty. they would design a new amphitheater, a new pavilion with a cafe with a walkway to the nearby tidal basin. this here is another design. they will transform the constitution gardens near the lincoln memorial. they'll bear a designing an overhauled water basin for model boats and ice-skating as well. there'll also be a new restaurant pavilion that overlooks the park. there's also a third team's overalled design of the hall and square. it will be sent to the capital's architect for approval.

tracee wilkins talked with neighbors. >> reporter: neighbors tell me she is called the dog whisperer of the neighborhood. she has such a good relationship with the animals that if someone is having a problem with their dog, that is who they take the animal to see. now, she is recovering from an unexpected dog attack. this olney suburb is the perfect neighborhood for dog lovers. >> almost every single house has a dog or two. >> reporter: part of the reason so many people here are shocked by yesterday's dog attack. he saw the woman who was attacked. >> i saw a young lady sitting on the grass and two other people helping her out she was bleeding around her face. >> reporter: animal control officials say a 24-year-old woman was walking her parents rottweiler when the dog attacked the neighbor. everyone involved lives in the neighborhood, they all know one another. >> the neighbor i saw helping her out was really stressed out and she -- i was looking at her face, i recognized her, i knew something was terribly wrong. >> reporter: animal control officials say the woman was severely injured

tracee wilkins has details. >> this morning d.c. police are taking pictures of evidence searching for additional shell casings and trying to piece together this deadly shooting. people who live in this community say they heard about four shots last night. then they say they saw dozens of police cars quickly arrive. d.c. police say that around 10:30 last night, they were called to the 4200 block of sixth street and southeast for the report of a man walking to yorkshire terriers while armed with a gun. >> as the officers confronted the individual, the individual produced a weapon and fired at the officer. the officer returned fire striking the individual multiple times. >> police say the man was killed on the scene and his gun recovered. the officer who was shot was taken to the hospital for evaluation. >> how many people you see walking a dog, two yorkies with guns? >> lionel peterson knew the man. he said he had an 8-year-old son and lived nearby with his girlfriend. he says he's surprised by the accusation that he was armed. >> nev

tracee wilkins more on what happened. us up to speed. >> reporter: aaron, they have shut down eisenhower avenue. let me say again that that's going to impact folks who are trying to get to the van dorn street metro. what you'll have to do is take the van dorn exit. they will allow you to enter the metro from that point. if you're trying to use the eisenhower connector, you can only go east on eisenhower connector. so you may want to keep straight and take the van dorn exit. now that we have that out of the way, are the me show you what this scene looks like closer up. we have video of what happened here. now this fire affected about a block's worth of storage unit here. and that included about 100 different sized units. now 50 to 60% of those units have been damaged by the fire. some of that smoke damage, some water damage. and some from fire. this happened at the atlantic self-storage unit here in alexandria. the fire department got the call to come down here around 3:53 a.m. and found the storage unit fully involved. no

news4's tracee wilkins is live outside the courthouse with more on the sentence just handed down. tracee, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, barb raxt the u.s. state's attorney says this sman who is lawless, who has never demonstrated any respect for the law. and should not be shown any more leniency underneath the law. so after this trial, this morning, they did decide to go ahead and give serial williams the life without the possibility of parole. he will be going to prison for the rest of his life. for the murder of trooper brown, who was killed in june of 2010. now there are a couple of other details that came out here as they were doing the sentencing. first of all, it came out that the reason that this man was thrown out of an appleby's in june of 2010 was because he had apparently urinated on another one of the customer there is and was being disruptive. well he was thrown out. today, we heard from trooper brown's -- partner, who said that when he came out of the bar, trooper brown decided that this man did not need to be arrested, but should be let go and given a seco

news4's tracee wilkins as more. >> reporter: metro says that riders will be feeling and seeing a heavy police presence throughout the system today. they're also asking riders to help them out by reporting any suspicious activity this they may see. this started last night as folks were leaving nationals park. they experienced some of what we're going to be seeing throughout the day. heightened security marks the first-year anniversary of the death of osama bin laden. metro officials will step up patrols at major cross stations on platforms, inside trains and they're also going to be walking around with canine dogs and really large guns. but of course, this is all planned. transit police say there isn't a credible or specific threat against the system. but they say al qaeda has shown interest in anniversaries and significant dates in the past. so they want to be prepared. riders we spoke with say they appreciate the extra security. >> it's, it feels good to have extra protection. >> it's very comforting to have the extra police support. >> if you don't experience this high police presenc

in alexandria, i'm tracee wilkins, news4. >>> this morning, the ntsb is trying to figure out why twos collided in mid air in northern virginia, killing two people. the planes crashed around 4:00 yesterday afternoon near silver road in fauquier county. the crash was so violent, the two planes landed about a mile apart from one another. one of the planes caught fire when it hit the ground. the pilot and a passenger in that plane died. a news4 crew found the plane in a wooded area reduced to nothing but rubble. near a man's back yard. >> i mean that's relatively close. >> about 400 yards away. is what it is. >> and how does that make you feel? >> blessed. very blessed right now. >> reporter: why? >> because we could have been in the house when the plane struck it. >> the pilot of the other plane was able to land in this field. he was taken to washington hospital in fredericksburg, we don't know his condition at this time. none of the victims' names have been released. the faa tells news4 it could take weeks to figure out what caused the crash. >>> maryland state police say speed may be

news4's tracee wilkins has more. >> reporter: d.c. police say when they arrived to the scene, they found a victim stabbed behind the wheel of his car. now the question is, what happened before that fatal stabbing. police say they were called to the 500 block of florida avenue, for the report of a car crash. once on the scene, they found a man stabbed. in the neck. police say the man had an altercation up the street that resulted in the stabbing. he got into his car and apparently lost control a short distance away. it's easy to see the path of the car last night this fence was taken out and you come down this way, you can see where the lightpole was also taken out and the car just keeps going. until it stops after running into this restaurant. the car hit the newly-opened shaw's tavern in the shaw community. even though the crash was a violent one, very little damage was left on outside of the restaurant. crews have already started making repairs on the lamppost that was damaged. this morning, detectives returned to the restaurant, ho

news4's tracee wilkins has the latest from the scene. >> reporter: fairfax county police spokesman saythey're still trying to figure out exactly what they're dealing with here. now they know that they have two victims, stabbing victim and a gunshot victim. but they don't know exactly what led to this happening. now the gunshot victim showed up here at a fairfax county county courthouse just before midnight last night. police say he was transported there by a friend who was trying to help. he told police that his stabbing happened in chantilly. he is now being treated for nonlife-threatening injuries. then shortly after that, another victim shows up at the fair oaks hospital. but this man is suffering from a stab wound. he also told police that his stabbing happened in chantilly. but police say beyond that right now, neither one of the victims are being very cooperative, so they don't have a lot of information. but they do believe that these folks knew each other and that this may have resulted in some kind of an argument that happened at a chantilly bar. it's very strange where they bo

tracee wilkins has details for us now. >> reporter: d.c. police have providedome updates in this investigation. first of all, they say that the 10-year-old victim was actually grazed by the bullet during the shooting and not shot. she's expected to make a full recovery. meantime, police are still trying to figure out exactly what led to the shooting in the first place. just after 3:30 this morning, d.c. police say that an adult woman pulled up to the sixth district police station and carrying a 10-year-old girl who had been injured in some sort of a drive-by shooting. she drove her pickup truck nearly three miles from the scene of the actual shooting. d.c. police say that the shooting started here at new york avenue and fenwick. now according to the adult woman who was in the pickup truck another vehicle pulled up next to her truck. this was a white vehicle. we don't know if it was a truck or car. she told police there were three women and one man inside of that vehicle. and that that's where the shots came from. striking her truck. she the

tracee wilkins is live on the scene now with the latest. good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning. this is a very strange situation how all of this unfolded, and it is still under investigation. that's why police are still on the scene with 6th street blocked off in southeast. let me show you what it looked like earlier here. this is how police described the situation. they say that at around 10:30 last night they got a call for a man with a gun. they say that the man was described as a black male who was bald, walking two dogs, when officers responded to the decent and saw someone matching that description. they approached the individual. police say that that individual then took out a gun and fired at the officer, striking one. the officers returned fire, hitting the man multiple times. he died from his gunshot wounds. here's what police have to say about the officer who was struck first. >> the officer, we think he has a graze wound to the leg. he was taken to the hospital for precautionary measures to look at his leg to make sure

tracee wilkins is live at the l'enfant plaza station with more. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, eun. you're definitely going to see and feel a police presence throughout the metro system today. and police are also asking for folks to let them know if they see anything suspicious. folks who awere leaving nationa park last night had the opportunity to get a peek at what we'll be seeing today throughout the system. the heightened secured marks the first year of the death of osama bin laden. patrols will be stepped up on plarm platforms, inside trains. there will be k-9 dogs and large guns. transit police say there isn't a credible threat against the system but say al qaeda is known to show an interest in anniversaries and significant dates in the past. so they want to be prepared. and also know that this heightened security will be both seen and unseen. metro officials aren't being specific about which stations they'll be targeting. we understand that they may want to target a lot of those metro stations in federal areas as well as other one
