tracy: yeah.e the fact that 157,000 jobs were created, we've got a guest who says the labor market is still in poor shape. she is focused on ways to create jobs this year. diana fur much got roth joins us. until which get to your list, what bothered you the most in this report today? >> well first of all the unemployment rate went up that is more americans who are out of work. and second the pace of job creation was very slow. at this rate we'll only get back to 6.5% unemployment in january 2017. the fed says that it is going to continue to prime the pump until the unemployment rate goes down to 6.5%. that is january 2017. that is probably why the markets went up. ashley: what is the biggest reason, diana, companies are just not hiring right now and what can be done to get the ball rolling? >> one of the reasons is the new health care act that place as tax of $2200 on each worker above 49 if the employer is not offering the right kind of health insurance. so for many employers moving from 49 worke

tracy: right.is pipeline underway, this puts your place in the oil world, i mean catapults you guys as a company, as a player in the industry. your stock has been up in anticipation it will be approved. you guys raised the dividend 3.6% as your dividend of the talk about earnings report a little it about. i know you missed on the revenue side, but, thus far pretty good as far as profit goes. >> i think we're well-positioned for the future. obviously like all companies that have some commodity exposure our earnings were impacted a bit through 2012. i expect that will come back as the economy recovers and gas and power prices recover. as we go forward we're well-positioned with things like keystone pipeline but we've also signed about, you know, another $15 billion worth of opportunities this year to build infrastructure in canada and mexico and in the united states, which i think will, you know, goes as well to, where our earnings and dividend are going in the future. tracy: russ girling, fingers cr

tracy: all right. after two is today of gains on really disappointing earnings and new worries about europe. what is the best way to keep your money safe? we'll bring in margie patel, senior portfolio manager with wells capital management. we hit dow 14,000 for the first time in five years. we have a pullback. did we go up too fast and will we see 13,5 before we see 1400 again? >> i think we might. we had a terrific run-up from the late fall all through january. we have kind of a news lull for most individual companies. most companies have reported. there is not any new good news. we might see a pullback if a stock is up 20%, which many good companies are the last two months it takes away your enthusiasm. so why not wait a little bit and maybe the market will lower short term. ashley: margie, after this relentless bull market you still believe that stocks are reasonably priced. if i haven't jumped in yet should i wait for much anticipated pullback or should i jump in now? >> i don't think there is a ne

tracy: all right.not be making much headway this week some individual stocks are actually making some big moves. from zillow to pepsico, sandra smith has a look at some of today's winners in today's trade. >> hey, tracy, ashley. here is the muted action we're seeing in the broader stock market but if you look at individual names we have really big movers. look at zillow. we all know the website. you can look for properties in your neighborhood online. it is up 11% after spectacular earnings after the bell last night. revenue is up 73% for the company. what is really key, they had 46 million unique visitors in the month of january alone. that was a record for the company. remember they make their money on advertisements on their website. over half of those that visited in the month of january visited on their mobile devices. this was just huge for them. by the way if i bring up a year-to-date chart, spectacular 57% year-to-date performance. so we're looking about a month and a half of gains there. zillo

tracy: i'm tracy byrnes. let's go right to capitol hill and peter barnes who is inside as ben bernanke gave his testimony today. peter: that is right. the fed chairman once again defending his policies but also getting hit again with questions about too big to fail again from the massachusetts delegation in congress. michael capuano went after him and too big to fail. leader yesterday in the senate banking committee from elizabeth warren, the new senator from massachusetts on the same issue. let's hear that today. >> would it be fair for me to paraphrases to average people that the chairman of the federal reserve thinks that sequestration is stupid? >> i wish you wouldn't do that. what i am saying -- >> or would it be fair? >> what i am saying is by a more gradual approach but with more cuts in the longer-term, achieves both objectives, not slowing recovery by too much put on the other hand addressing the long-term issues. again, to paraphrase, not to quote, you think sequestering is stupid. i agree with you,

i will send it back to tracy. tracy: jamie colby, thanks very much. >> sure thing.ut spend having raised calls for a complete overhaul of the tax code. now there's talk that tax breaks like your 401(k) could be at risk but our next guest wrote a report expanding tax breaks to more americans and small businesses. she is the vice president and codirector of the economic studies at brookings institute. karen, thanks for being with us right now. you're thinking there should be more tax breaks for low income, low income taxpayers and small businesses. how come? >> well, you know, the paper is really about making the tax code more effective. so the fact is the federal government is spending a ton money on these retirement savings programs and it is not clear that these programs are serving their intended purposes. so, you know, much of the subsidy goes to higher income households. i think the thinking there is that those guys do most of the saving and that's entirely correct. but the problem is that these guys are saving a lot anyway and research suggests that giving them

tracy: yeah.ools, airport security, border patrol agents those are some things that could be impacted should sequestration cuts go into effect. one more day for lawmakers to figure out a solution, five bucks said, that is not happening. okay. will they be able to stop the $85 billion in spending cuts? rich edson in washington. that is a rhetorical question, right? >> yeah. at least not by friday, no. you know, tomorrow the senate likely votes on democratic and republican bills to replace these automatic spending cuts. neither is likely to pass. on friday congressional leaders, the top democrats and republicans in the house and senate are scheduled to meet with president obama at the white house. the administration says the president will push for a balanced plan, tax increases and spending cuts to replace across the board government cuts beginning friday. republicans describe the meeting scheduled yesterday and occurring the day the cuts begin as little more than a photo-opportunity. this morning

tracie potts is live in washington with more on that. and a new photo of the president that's been raising some eyebrows, tracie? >> reporter: absolutely. he's traveling to minnesota because that's a state that's made a big push to curb gun violence, especially in minneapolis. that's the setting, the backdrop behind president obama pushing federal proposals. take a look at this picture. it is the president, gun in hand, skeet shooting at camp david. over the weekend, the white house released the photo. critics are saying it's an obvious effort, as they put it, to pander to conservatives, making the point that the president supports the second amendment while pushing for gun-control measures. one measure that does seem to be gaining some momentum on capitol hill are universal background checks. it was yesterday, you may have seen it during the super bowl game, when the mayors for illegal guns, mayor bloomberg's group, ran this after columbine accusing the nra of a flip-flop, supporting background checks now against it. the ceo of the nra

nbc's tracie potts has the details from washington. tracie, have they just given up on the deal at this point? >> reporter: well, i mean, with 24 hours to go, mara, it looks like the focus is how to minimize the impacts of what's about to happen. we're told president obama will sign this, if he signs it, likely towards the end of the day. he has until midnight late night on friday to do so. as you noted, he's called congressional leaders to the white house tomorrow morning on the day of this going into effect. john boehner who by the way he ran into on capitol hill when he was dedicating the rosa parks statue yesterday. they chatted for about a minute. the closest we've seen to any talks or compromise in days. boehner, also minority leader nancy pelosi will be at that meeting. along with harry reid, the senate democratic leader, and mitch mcconnell, the senate republican leader. all of them likely to talk about where we go next. we're already starting to see some changes. homeland security releasing some illegal immigrants from detenti

for "california country," i'm tracy sellers. >> today, we're going to make a mushroom quiche, one of my favorites. so, let's get started. let's start over here. so, we get the quiche. just use a regular pie dough. and don't be afraid of your dough. get it rolled out. i'm using a mac daddy rolling pin. it's serrated, but it rolls and doesn't get the dough sticky. so, from here... you get it rolled out to the size you want. and it's pretty fast if you work quickly with a nice, cold dough. and from--i think at this point, you have a nice shape. put this in the refrigerator and chill it down just as it is, and you can fold it. it's really tough. so, what you want to achieve iq, i would get here a nice fluted pan. pie dgh is inside. just spray the inside and press this in and chill this for another 20 minutes. so, we get started with that. i'm going to slice up some of these shallots. and you can be messy with them, 'cause you want to taste them. you don't want them too fine. you don't know what they are. so, just a few on the bottom

for "california country," i'm tracy sellers. >> hi. i'm chef paul murphy. and today, we're going to make an absolutely fabulous strawberry salad with bleu cheese from point reyes. i have some romaine lettuce, some strawberries, some carrots. and we're going to finish it off with a balsamic glaze. thesd are the simple steps you're going to take to enjoy this wonderful strawberry salad. some romaine lettuce, we're going to cut it as strips. next, we're going to slice up some of the strawberries. we're going to place these ingredients in a bowl, add some of the carrots, and last but not least, that delicious point reyes bleu cheese. we're going to put, oh, a nice amount. we'll chop it up. so we'll tosp this. we'll add some of the balsamic glaze. what it is, it's pomegranate syrup, and i reduce it, and i add balsamic vinegar to it. so it's a wonderful, wonderful alternative to something else. this dish can be enjoyed as a first course, or i would serve it as a dessert with a nice port, or maybe a big cab, and you finish off a lovely evening at home so there's a
