let's go to tracie potts in washington. tracie, good morning to you. >> reporter: veronica, good morning. good morning, everyone. we hear this morning that there may be at least a short-term deal in the works where congress would be able to work this out so the united states does not default on its bills come august 2nd. here is that short-term deal. $1 trillion in spending cuts, which would allow the u.s. to borrow $1 trillion and prevent a default for at least seven months. another version of that. $2 trillion in cuts, $2 trillion in borrowing that would prevent default until the end of next year. john boehner's office says it hasn't seen anything on the table yesterday. president bush wants to raise taxes in part, but republicans are furious at him for suggesting this week that they've been taking too much time off as opposed to working on this very important issue. the tone here is, in fact, changing. one of the big concerns and senator harry reid brought this up yesterday, is if they don't come up with a deal soon, how

for the latest, we go to tracie potts in washington for us. good morning. >> reporter: lynn, good morning. just a glimmer of hope this morning from the so-called gang of six. three democrats and republicans who have been working together on a compromise. the plan on the table would cut $4 trillion from the deficit, lower taxes, but also bring in a trillion dollars in new revenues by closing tax loopholes. both sides seem to like it at least as a first step. president obama calling this a very significant step in line with what he's been working on at the white house. republicans saying it has good elements. they want to take a very close look at this. that after republicans yesterday in the house passed their cap, cut and balance plan. it's pot expected to pass the senate as it moves forward today. president obama has already said he will not sign that $6 trillion plan. but there's still significant opposition here on capitol hill, but not across the country. a new nbc poll finds most americans want to see compromise here. >> so where exactly

. >> tracie potts for us in washington. last night on the last word with lawrence o'donnell, steny hoyer told lawrence what he thinks about mixing taxes into the debate over raising the debt ceiling. >> very unfortunate that the republicans continue to pursue this particularly when mr. boehner and the president have reached an agreement tentatively on two different occasions. and mr. boehner has walked away. frankly the republicans have walked intentionally more than barry bonds. and the fact of the matter is that we need to come to an agreement, the senate, senator reid has offered exactly what they asked for. mr. cantor said we have no taxes in our bill. he was very pumped up about that to tell his constituents, that the richest people in america were not going to have to pay anything towards solving this problem. but frankly, the senate is prepared to offer that, because they feel very strongly responsible step to take is to make sure that america is able to pay its bills on august 3rd. >> don't miss "last word" with law

for more we go to tracie potts in washington. >> reporter: we hear this morning there may be at least a short-term deal in the works where congress would be able to work this out so the united states does not default on its bills come august 2nd. here is that short-term deal. a trillion dollars in spending cuts which would allow the u.s. to borrow $1 trillion and prevent a default for at least seven months. another version of that, 2 trillion in cuts, 2 trillion in borrowing that would prevent a default until the end of next year. house speaker john boehner's office said they have not seen anything on the table yet. president obama wants to raise taxes in part to prevent problems with the deficit, but republicans are furious at him for suggesting this week that they have been taking too much time off as opposed to working on this very important issue. the tone here is, in fact, changing. one of the big concerns and senator harry reid brought this us up yesterday s if they don't come up with a deal soon, how might the markets react and how might that effect ordinary families? veronica?

tracie potts is live in washington with a look at the scramble to get this deal done. good morning. >> reporter: laura, good morning. that's why democrats say if this plan will never make it to the president's desk because not a single senate democrat will vote for it why are we wasting a day dealing with it. john boehner, the republican leaders retooled his plan after budget officials said it didn't save as much as he thought. now he found more savings, it's up for a vote but he's having trouble even in his party to get the tea party to vote for it. a number of conditionses say they are not going for the plan. and it adds too much to the national debt. so, where is the road to compromise. there is a senate version, we haven't seen it yet, that has some of the same elements of john boehner's plans, specifically a commission that would come back in the fall after about a trillion dollars of cuts now, and take another look at this in the fall to dind additional cuts. the two sides don't seem to have put their heads together yet. we're now just about five days away from t

tracie potts is live with a look at the scramble to get this debt deal done.morning. >> reporter: it's a scramble but are they moving anywhere? democrats say this is dead in the water even if it does pass the house. it's the boehner plan that we've been talking about. the republican plan to cut about a trillion dollars turns out it's a little less than that. it's the money that both sides essentially agreed on and then they'd have a commission to look at more cuts in the fall. conservative republicans say it's not enough, they are holding the line. they want more. democrats say with that small amount of cuts, a trillion doesn't seem small but on the large scheme of thing, that we could suffer a loss in our credit rating and everyone's interest rates would soar. bottom line, john boehner is trying to pull together enough sport but even if he does it's probably not going to pass congress entirely. where do we go from here. the democrats do have a plan but it hasn't reached the floor yet. republicans have issues with the math in that plan when it comes to how the

tracie potts is live in washington with more. good morning. >> good morning. were wondering your member of congress in general makes 1$174,000 a year, some of the leaders like nancy pelosi make a little bit more than that. but bottom line now they are looking at perhaps freeze or slashing their salaries as they deal with the budget crisis. somewhat symbolically to let americans know that they are taking a hit as well. they haven't slashed salaries since the great depression, they had been frozen for the last two years going into 2012. now they are looking at what to do for 2013. here is an interesting point, though. half the people who work in this building on capitol hill make $1 million or more, are worth $1 million or more. for example, the wealth of senator dianne feinstein, she is worth $77 million. senator boxer, worth almost $3.5 million. there are other members of congress who are worth a lot less, some of them with a negative net worth. but the changes that they are talking about would be a few thousand dollars hit untheir salary. >> big money you're

today in the bay's tracie potts is live in washington with the latest.ood morning. >> good morning. making progress, yes, according to the president. a deal, no, not yet. there is a vote today in the house, republicans are putting forth a plan they call cut, cap and balance. essentially they want to cut the deficit, cap the spending and put in motion a balanced budget amendment to the constitution. democrats say they are concerned that this plan cuts too much out of medicare and social security. couple of other gop plans out there, com coburn suggests $9 trillion in cuts, four times what was on the table in the negotiations. but he's also backing tax increases. now, this is something that the republican party has been against. another republican plan in the senate by mitch mcconnell that would allow the president to raise the debt ceiling on his own and sort of procedurally force democrats to go along with that with no cuts, essentially politically making them responsible for doing nothing about cutting the deficit. but all of those at this point just on

tracie potts is live in washington with the details. good morning. >> good morning.ere you watching what happened overnight in minnesota? it's almost echoing some of what we're seeing here in washington. democrats and republicans couldn't reach agreement, one side wanted to raise taxes, the other refused. minnesota's government shut down at midnight. hoping to prevent that here in washington. hoping to prevent a default on bills come august. the debt talks that don't seem to have progressed far, a little light at the end of the tunnel now. there's talk of a possible deal where we cut $1 trillion out of the budget for now, allowing the u.s. to borrow $1 trillion and not default on bills for at least seven more months. there was another scenario if they can come to a deal on $2 trillion in cuts we could prevent that default until the end of next year. here's the problem. some republicans want the whole deal the entire $4 trillion that they have been working for. they don't want to see a short-term deal. they think we need to deal with this entire thing as one big packa
