nbc's tracie potts joins us live from washington, d.c. to explain. ie, good morning. >> reporter: hi, frances, good morning. it's long been feared here in washington that this would happen with more baby boomers drawing out of social security and medicare and fewer younger workers contributing. this is the first trustees reported since the $1.5 trillion tax cuts put in place by republicans and president trump. what it says is medicare will run out of funds in eight years. that's three years earlier than predicted. and according to t trustees, that's because there are lower payroll tax fower wages. hospitals are spending more and insurance companies are being paid more by the federal government. as for social security, that hasn't changed. it's running out in 16 years, with taxes covering only 3/4 of social security recipients in the next 75 years. that leaves one in four in jeopardy. what to do about this? that's where washington seems to be stuck. and we're talking 6 million recipients so far. frances? >> all right, tracie, thank you very much. >>> w
