nbc's tracie potts has more from capitol hill this morning. good morning to you. >> reporter: eun, good morning. including yet another one who may go on camera and go public. karen, a spokeswoman for the treasury department, is one of the original accusers who worked for the national restaurant association, filed a complaint, and got a payout after saying that cain sexually harassed her back in the '90s. she now through her attorney is saying she wants to set the record straight, go public in a news conference with the other three women we know of so far who have either filed complaints or claimed sexual harassment. a new reuters-ipsos poll after sharon bialeck went public on monday see cain in a different light. but in a news conference he was adamant he's not guilty of any sort of harassment, and he's not going to let this derail his campaign. >> as far as these accusations causing me to back off and maybe withdraw from this presidential primary race, ain't going to happen. >> reporter: this is sure to come up in tonight's debate in michigan

tracie, good morning. >> lynn, good morning. when you take a look at some of these initiatives, it seems clear that the measures that passed or didn't pass show that the electorate seems to be moving to the left. take a look at what happened in ohio. republicans wanted to restrict the collective bargaining rights of 350,000 public workers, a big government union issue up there. but ohio voters struck that down. and it lost by a wide margin. allowing those government workers to unionize. in mississippi, an amendment that would, they call it the personhood amendment, that would have defined life beginning at conception, that was rejected, in fact by a handy margin there as well. despite the fact that both gubernatorial candidates, the democrat and the republican, backed it. it would have restricted abortion and in some cases, some forms of birth control as well. and finally, in maine, voters restored a four decade-old policy that allows voters there to register to vote on the same day. here on capitol hill, democrats are calling o

what tracy was describing are the internal economic conflicts that are occurring, but there are very real social implications to what's happening. in france at the moment, the leader in the race to be the next president of france is actually an extreme right winger, the daughter of jean marie le pen who is a racist. there's been a rise in germany of attacks on turkish immigrants. in britain, local elections, which 20 years ago never returned a racist member of the british national party. there are now four or five counselors. what i'm saying is that there is a resonance about this attempt to salvage the economy without due reference to the fact that there are very real social implications. we've had riots in rome. we've had the people on the streets in greece. today there are -- there is in effect a national strike in the united kingdom. those are the implications that i'm suggesting to you resonate with what happened before the second world war. >> and i couldn't agree more, exactly my primary anxiety in watching our unwillingness to engage the insolvency issue instead of pretending

nbc's tracie potts joins us with the very latest on this. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. cain insists there is no coincidence why these allegations are coming out now that he won another big poll in iowa. he calls it, as you said, a witch hunt. that was at the press club here yesterday. cain over the course of yesterday, a number of appearances and interviews, seemed to gradually remember more details about what happened when he was head of the national restaurant association back in the '90s. we have now confirmed that two women accused him of sexual harassment, and one received a five-figure settlement. >> i can't even remember her name because she had not been a long-term employee, but i do remember the formal allegations she made in terms of sexual harassment. >> reporter: cain says those allegations were baseless. he does remember a payout. cane says he doesn't remember much about the second. we have confirmed there was a five-figure pay-out in one of the cases. nbc talked to the hr manager and with board members who were there at the time who say they don't remember

nbc's tracie potts joins us from washington with all the detail. good morning to you. a busy day yesterday. >> reporter: it certainly was. herman cain says he's reassessing because of these allegations, which he has denied, created a negative cloud around his campaign and emotional toll for his family, so he needs to take a second look at whether to continue his campaign. he didn't talk about it in his foreign policy speech yesterday but he did e-mail supporters saying that ginger white's allegations of an affair were fabricated and unsubstantiated. she's a friend who he helped financially but we're starting to see the impact. he backed out of an event yesterday with journalists. his iowa campaign ad is on hold because supporters have backed out there and lost an endorsement from new hampshire. rick perry, another gaffe on the campaign trail. this is what he said about the legal voting age. >> those 21 by november 12th i ask for your support. those who won't, just work hard. >> reporter: perry corrected that saying people in this country can vote at the age of 18. he s
