tracy? >>> we continue to stay on top of breaking news in atlantic city, where firefighters have been working for nearly seven hours now trying to get this raging fire under control. it started around 10:00 last night on atlantic avenue just a few blocks away from the boardwalk. nbc 10's katy zachry is live near the scene. katy, what problems have crews faced fighting this fire this morning? >> reporter: well, tracy, in a word, the wind. and the fire chief will speak to that in just a minute. but if you can look right now, you see the top floor. there is still smoke and there still are some flames. really nothing compared to the height of the fire, the video that we showed you right at the top of this story. now, the fire broke out just after 10:00 inside a sewing and upholstery shop on the 1100 block of atlantic avenue. when firefighters got here, five young children and four adults had self-evacuated, had basically taken it upon themselves to leave their apartments. they live above this se

. >> tracy, we know about the past cases involving dr. kent brantly and the other release workers diagnosed with ebola in africa, but this is the first -- this man is the first patient to be diagnosed with the ebola virus in the u.s., on american soil. now, the man recently traveled from liberia to dallas. that's where he became ill. he started exhibiting symptoms of ebola as he was already on the ground in dallas. he's been put in isolation at texas health presbyterian hospital since sunday. now, doctors have not released the man's name, age or nationality. the cdc says there is no risk of transmission to people who are on the plane with the man. that's because he wasn't yet exhibiting symptoms and they say without those symptoms, you're not contagious. no other cases are suspected in texas at this time or anywhere else in the u.s., but that hasn't stopped concerns over this disease, concerns that the nation's top public health official is trying to calm. >> bottom line here is that i have no doubt that we will control this importation o

tracy. >>> now to the developing story this morning. the ebola outbreak we now know that the cdc knew about the latest victim's fever before she got on a plane. top officials say she shouldn't have boarded that flight. amber vinson has arrived in atlanta for treatment. the cdc cleared to her fly before she boarded that commercial plane to visit her family. the plane she was on is cleaned and disinfected. meantime, president obama says the response to any future cases will be more aggressive. nbc10 christine maddela and chris cato arrived to discuss more on the outbreak. >> reporter: we found out amber vinson, the second nurse to contract the ebola virus here in dallas actually reached out to the cdc on monday. a government spokesperson said she knew she had an elevated temperature of 99.5 and wanted to check in with the cdc to make sure it was okay for her to get on a compergs flight. the cdc did not ban her from getting on that plane. >> at this point, i really don't know how to feel. >> reporter: that woman was on that frontier airlin
