tracie? >> reporter: darlene, i have to tell you, for all of the activity we've seen out here over the past couple of hours, there's really been a silence from the captains, the detectives, and the police officers here where officer randolph holder was shot. at one point, the foot bridge by the fdr was illuminated. we saw officers walking step by step trying to piece together exactly what happened. overnight, we had a timeline of the events that led up to that five-year veteran being shot in the head. the initial call of shots fired came in at 102nd street and 1st avenue. that's when holder and another housing bureau officer responded to shots fired. he was shot near here, 120th street, at a footpath right near the northbound fdr. the suspect wasn't nabbed, however, until he got to 124th street. all of this started when witnesses reported seeing several men fleeing after shots were fired at 102nd street around 8:30 last night. officer holder and another plain clothes officer encountered a man

tracie? >> reporter: michael, i've been on the phone with suffolk county police all morning long. they now confirmed to me two people were killed, the result of a head-on crash and a wrong way driver. all of this happening on the northern state parkway about three hours ago. we have video of one of the cars in question involved in all of this. it's absolutely charred. it's said to be a fiery wreck around 2:38 this morning. now they say that vehicle struck a suffolk county police car and during the chase then hit another vehicle going towards the northern state parkway on the ramp towards wolf hill road. it's unconfirmed if the driver in that vehicle is the other confirmed fatality. again, two people confirmed dead, the result of a wrong way driver on the northern state parkway. you see the lights flashing, michael, behind me. this is the entrance to the northern state. lauren's been saying in traffic, a lot of police activity and no estimate on when the road will be reopened. back to you. >>
