>> one world trade center, the freedom tower, will be the center piece of the rebuilt complex.to reach just as high as the original north tower with the antenna it will be even tower. a floorious and symbolic 1776 feet. tower 2 will be 1339 feet, tower 3, 1170 and tower 4, 977. the first building, including tower one, should open in 2013, they tell us. the twin towers and the victims who died in them will not be forgotten. as you will see, the rebuilt complex will include a memorial plaza and museum. the whole site, buildings and all, will take up 16 acres of prime lower manhattan real estate. as the world trade center rises, larry silverstein remained the man at the top. since 2006 this 80-year-old has been overseeing the new construction from the 38th floor of the new building 7. that makes sense. remember, he built the original building number 7 almost 25 years ago. silverstein said he wants to ensure that each structure is special. he wants the complex to have the same cultural and economic impact that rockfeller center had on midtown manhattan when it opened. >> at one sit

like most people, i heard about the first plane hitting the world trade center. atter of minutes, when the second plane hit, i realized we were unattack. i went to the fbi operations center which was the command center for the response. together with director bob muller, brand new as fbi director, we began the process of identifying w was responsible and perhaps more important, making sure we didn't have a follow-on attack. >> the follow-on attack is what concerns everybody to this day. former congressman lee hamilton, famously said recently, most people he knows in the security and intelligence community believe that it is only just a matter of time until there is a successful attack on the homeland of this country. how do you feel about what he said? >> well, i think we are unquestionably, much schaefer than we were 10 years ago. i think the ability of terrorists to bring operatives from around the world into the u.s. is much less than it was 10 years ago. obviously, we can't guarantee perfect safety. in fact, we had a couple years ago, a horrible incident at fo

both world trade center towers had come down. 7 world trade center hadn't come down yet. they told us to wait on the west side highway. pushed us all, all the firefighters, police officers, off to the west side highway and really we just waited until about 4:00 in the afternoon until 7 world trade center came down and then when that building came down, everybody just grabbed whatever tool was next to them or what they had collected throughout the day. a lot of fire apparatus was along the west side highway, dropping off gear that we would ethwe'll need. it was a total free for all. you took what you needed, what you thought you might need, and like i said, when 7 world trade center came down about 4:00 in the afternoon, we took what we had and we all walked over to where we felt we could do some work. >> started dig. >> yeah. started digging. i stayed until about 4:00 in the afternoon on september 12th, and in and out throughout the next seven weeks i stayed down at the trade center until about the third week of november. >> tell me what happened when you knew you weren't

that's when they told me the second aircraft just hit the world trade center.ly some confusion in my cockpit. i thought i was chasing american flight 11. they told me a second aircraft which i didn't even know about. i looked up right away and could see the smoke coming out of both towers. i saw the towers burn with two airliners in them, we're obviously under attack. >> reporter: in the air traffic control center mike mccormick, too, realizes the united states is under assault from the air. >> we have to do something to remove their weapons. the weapons of course are aircraft. so i couldn't go anywhere around new york because i didn't know what else could happen. so we made the decision to clear the skies. we brought all the supervisors from all the areas up here and provided a briefing to them, this is what happened, this is what we're doing. >> reporter: eventually it would spread nationwide. every airplane in the sky literally thousands would be told to land. any airplane that refused the order would be considered hostile. >> by 10:00 the skies were empty o

he took a job as a director of security at the world trade center. right up until the night before he died, john o'neill was telling everybody over dinner, they were half joking with him, you're out of game now. isn't it amazing, you know? you're taking a job at the world trade center that once hit and get very serious and you're going to keep coming at this building until they take it down. and he also said something big was going to happen. as late as saturday -- as late as the night before september 11th. on september 11th, he was in the towers when they were struck. he went and helped some children out of the daycare center. there were two frenchmen and took video as many people knew they were following a young probationary fireman around and they were in the world trade center filming the probationary fireman when the towers were attacked. and john o'neill is in that video. you can actually see him for several minutes and then at one point he starts walking towards the south tower. actually i interviewed an f.b.i. agent who was probably the last

to bomb the world trade center which at the time they believed was literally the center of the world's trade. they imagined the world as an arab city with a market. you take out the market and trade stops. the idea that the name might simply be a marketing gimmick by the new york port authority never occurred to them. so ksm and his nephew ramzi yousef become famous in jihadis circles for carrying out this attack which for various logistical and other reasons was considered impossible. now he has a choice. he can join al qaeda or one of the major terror organizations or he can set out on his own as a terrorist entrepreneur. and interestingly does. he has his own network of funders. he plans to carry out his own attacks. so in 1994 we find him in the philippines plotted to blow up 11 airliners simultaneously over the pacific and as i detail in "mastermind" he plots to kill the pope and president clinton in separate attacks. he later make another attempt on the pope's life in 1998. the pope and the president are ongoing targets for ksm and al qaeda. these attacks failed. the philippine p

it's about seven miles north of the world trade center site. we'll take you there next. soledad o'brien joins us now. soledad, is the memorial still going on there? >> reporter: you know, it's interesting. the memorial itself has wrapped up, but what we have here are firefighters who have driven in, in many cases, on their motorcycles to be part of the celebration here. it's almost remarkable. they did this convoy of motorcycles right down riverside drive, where you're right, anderson, about eight miles north of where you are. so after the memorial ended and many of the firefighters from the fdny went off to church, folks from, you know, every state, literally every single state, plus i've seen firefighters from germany and from france and canada and australia, are here and taking an opportunity to check out the firefighters memorial, which is really the centerpiece of the event that was here today is remarkable. we wanted to tell the story today of a woman named regina wilson, a firefighter whose story we tell in a document that we have airing tonight at 10:00 p.m. on c
