trainor. dean trainor received a bachelor of arts from yale a doctorate of law in history from harvard. he clericed for the honorable james l. folks for the u.s. court of appeals before serving in a variety of positions in state and federal government. in 1991, dean trainor began teaching at fordham law school where he would later serve for eight years as dean. dean trainor joined georgetown university law center in 2010 and has led the school through impressive changes, including a great expansion in the number of experiential offerings across the clinical, externship, pract couple and simulation programs. given dean trainor's long-term support of public interest advocacy by students an lawyers, washington council of lawyers is appreciative of his service as a member of our honorary board. now i turn the stage over to dean trainor and justice kagan to start our discussion. [laughter] ut as i said, it is great to see you all here. when we were initially planning this event, we were going to have it at a much smaller venue, because it is july. students are gone, faculty are mostly not around, so we figured we would not attract a large audience. we did not have to worry about that, it turns out. he justice obviously has serious star power. as soon as the event was sent out to the law center community, we got enormous number of rsvp's. we had to shutdown the rsvp link within 24 hours. we have a satellite venue. please come on in. for the first panel, ruthanne, dori, and justice ginsberg. who have teenage daughters might recognize that we came on stage to eight megan trainor song. i'm a force of nature, don't underestimate, i'm in charge. with that predicate, i will try to moderate this panel. i have a couple of questions for you collectively and a few to focus on your individual legislative accomplishments. this national security woman thing, where did that get started and -- it's kind of fun. [laughter] whose idea was it? >> i'll take a crack of that. came as a serendipitous occasion when several of us were out as candidates are apt to do on the fundraising campaign trail and we ran into each other almost exactly at the same time in the same place in california and none of us reading from california. we were going to be having back to back-to-back events with the same group of people. we realized this was probably not optimal and we should probably do something innovative that all of our teams discouraged us from doing which was to join forces and have one event for all of us. in fact, we not only had all of us for the treat their but we invited to others who

deutsch: thank you dean trainor and thank you justice ginsburg for taking your time to talk, we are very grateful. our first set of questions is going to cover how gender equality manifests in your own life and dori is going to start the ball rolling. ms. bernstein: you and marty enjoyed a wonderful partnership, a model of mutual support and shared responsibility. your marriage was unusual, even in today's standards and unheard of in prior generations. here is what we all want to know, what is your secret? [laughter] justice ginsburg: there was no secret, it was luck that i met marty. it was at a time when the best degree that a girl could have was not her ba or jd, but mrs. money was a most unusual fellow, i said many times he was the only boy that i ever knew who cared that i had a brain. and we met under the best circumstances. marty had a girlfriend at smith college, and i had a boyfriend at columbia law school. ms. bernstein: this was interesting. justice ginsburg: our friends thought it was a long, cold winter. and they hooked us up.
