actually pretty similar to the secrecy and the approach of drafting the t p p which is the trans pacific partnership agreement we're going to skies that later on in the show but the thing is with active sea at lums attempts to take on counterfeiting and copyright infringement all into one agreement then it aims to create a so-called global standard global standard for these issues which in reality is really about a few countries making everybody else adapt to the way that they like to do things and it's had its opponents for years especially from those who push for more transparency and a lot of people in the tech community but only in the last year did we really see. we act to gain notoriety when on a mass scale protests erupted in europe and it made a difference like i said on wednesday the european parliament voted four hundred seventy eight to thirty nine rejecting. now that is a big deal some people out there have taken this to me that the agreement has been killed altogether but the truth is we do still have to be wary we have to realize it isn't completely out because only six countries need to ratify

complete secrecy the thirteenth round of negotiations started today in san diego the trans-pacific partnership is a trade agreement between chile australia new zealand in the united states among other countries critics say it will compromise food safety create monopolistic drug patents and which will lead to more expensive medicine allow millions of american jobs to be off shored cars financial deregulation and impede net neutrality and with so much at stake for the american people why is it that all these talks are being held behind closed doors joining me now to discuss this lori wallach director for public citizen global trade watch joins me now welcome laurie so first i want to ask what is the the big secret. well the transpacific partnership has been branded as a trade agreement but of its twenty six chapters only two of them are trade so hiding our twenty four chapters of who knows what sneaky back door one percenter agenda some chapters have leaked so for instance there is a foreign investors chapter that requires the u.s. to submit itself to the jurisdiction of foreign tribunals that would be able to award

that that's the end of the story but of course there are other trade agreements that are ongoing there's the trans-pacific partnership that the united states canada and a lot of other countries are involved with there is also a smaller agreement that's been the subject of negotiation for several years between canada and the european union i recently obtained a leaked document of the intellectual property chapter and wiley dates from february of this year so it's several months old i was stunned to find that as you went provision by provision it was literally taking x. to near word for word manner and inserting it into the sea to agreement. it seems to me they're also trying to get the courts involved here asking the european court of justice to rule on act in hopes that the european parliament will then perhaps reconsider the issue well certainly that's what they're doing so well the parliament has rejected this and that of course is you know in a sense the democratic vehicle representing the views of so many europe the european commission which negotiates these trade deals where the canadian trade deal that they're

one issue that we've been discussing on the show lately is the trans-pacific partnership or the t.p. for short it's a free trade agreement it's being negotiated behind closed doors by the united states and eight other countries and just yesterday the latest round of talks ended in san diego with negotiators reporting significant progress but of course this is all of this may of public interest advocates they've argued that the t.p. be like other free trade agreements would undermine democracy specifically critics have pointed to an investor state dispute resolution procedure basically found that a leak that would allow foreign companies to challenge regulations before a tribunal of private sector lawyers so laws to protect workers consumers the environment they could all potentially be challenged before an obscure panel if the t.p.s. ratified by congress was really enraged observers even more is the fact that this deal can expand without much oversight after it's passed and of course the real kicker is the current go she asians are being held with very little transparency the public is completely in the dark members of c

history of trade agreements there's a new one that this administration and i'm assuming that the bush administration before it has been negotiating in secret called the trans-pacific partnership first of all we've got a graphic of of the countries this is the map of who's involved is is this is this accurate these are the countries that are going to be involved in the trans pacific looking now at canada and mexico i'll be joining in december a really so so canada mexico and which which kind of places nafta well it's nafta on steroids plus all of asia all of asia and what is this what is the trans-pacific partnership how would you describe i would say it's the ultimate progression of this corporate hijacking of trade to deliver this whole other agenda of policies and lock them in because unlike a law that doesn't work well when you have these agreements you have to get all the other countries to agree to change a single comma so we let's say we pass a law told disaster we get rid of it now with one of these agreements for the corporations this is like super glue you get all these things that could not pass scrutiny and sunshine in public debate you lock them in and it is like
