actually the tallest building is the transamerica pyramid building.ou could say it's the sutro tower, transamerica pyramid is the tallest building. we're here and we have the unique opportunity thanks to the building owners and the managers of the building to come in and take a look at how the building is made and ough all of its mechanical systems. what keeps a mooirj major high rise building -- how many stories is this building? >> 50 stories, plus or minus a few. it was designed in the '60s by the firm buneir, who are the preeminent structural engineers from 1925 until this building. and then after this building they were priced out of the market by architectural firms that gave away the engineering services. the form of brunier was about 30 years ahead of their time. their designs are brilliant. and if you look at buildings that they did in the '20s and '30s it was like this guy was so smart, it was mind-boggling. >> so this building is a high rise building and a high rise building is one which is more than 75 feet from the ground, from the sidewa

this is our live weather camera looking out towards the transamerica building where we have numbers dipping into the mid 40s in santa rosa. otherwise it is 53 degrees in san mateo. our future cast clearly paints the clouds moving on shore and then overnight, we begin to see the clearing and this is 3:00 tomorrow afternoon. that's when we will have some abundance of sunshine. so your saturday afternoon will have some clearing from the clouds and then here's sunday, we start off with the clouds and then in the afternoon, very similar to saturday, we see the clearance. how does your monday shape up? it looks very cloudy with that rain beginning to move in from the north. any kind of rain we see will be very light. we'll measure it less than a tenth of an inch. this is a perfect area of low pressure. it's beautiful. the only problem, all the precipitation, leaving us with mostly cloudy skies, a few sprinkles possible. partly to mostly cloudy with that chance of rain by president's day and 70s by midweek. wait until you see that seven- day forecast. first off, lows in the 40s. tomorrow's highs w

i know that the transamerica pyramid, i think it was instrumented and i keep reading that it drifted a foot in the loma prieta earthquake. doesn't seem like much to me. how do these buildings perform in seismic events? >> historically no modern high-rise building has ever collapsed in a major event except for one building in mexico city where it was designed as an office building and the government converted it to a book warehouse. and they filled the floors up this high with paper. which effectivelily mad effectie building three times heavier than it should be. as a class, these buildings are probably some of the best buildings you could be in. >> but there was an interesting anomaly that came up as a result of the northridge earthquake in los angeles in the '90s. that was the welded steel joints which we up to that point thought were absolutely terrific, allowed a lot of movement, turned out to not just fail but to be weaker than we thought, to crack. there was an enormous effort coming forward, to figure out how this happened, how to prevent that in the future. >> part of the prob

lest anyone think that transamerica, trancanada rather, isn't in the re-export business in december, when i asked the president of transcanada whether he would agree to ensure that the oil and refined fuels stay here in this country, instead of re-exporting them, he said no. sitting right at that table. so that's the plan. in this republican bill. sneak the pipeline into the country, refine the oil and then sneak the diesel fuel right back out of the country. yesterday, the gentleman from nebraska said that tar sands oil could replace 1.5 or 2 million barrels of oil per day that we currently import from the persian gulf. even if the keystone xl pipeline was going to export 36,000 barrels a day, the idea that all of the keystone oil will stay in this country under this bill is just a fantasy. make no mistake, this bill is not about energy security, it is not about jobs, it is oil company profits, plain and simple. this bill just turns the united states into a middle man in a multinational oil deal between canada, south america, europe and china. the republican slogan last year was dri
