in thinking about transgender issues and familiarity with transgender individuals there's a similar pattern to what one would have observed 20 years ago for gay men or lesbians that not many people know a transgender individual, are familiar with the issues or familiar with the concerns of transgender commitment. therefore, it seems a little strange and alien to them. and it may make people uncomfortable. one of the big shifts that we've seen that's occurred in attitudes about lesbians and gay men has resulted in part because of popular culture depictions of gay men and lesbians. and still when transgender people are depicted in the mass media in popular culture often times they're relatively tragic figures or problem, problem individuals that don't have positive sort of presentations of trans individuals which makes it even more difficult for people to sort of identify with and feel comfortable about trans individuals. so until popular representations change or at least opportunities to have even hypothetical role models like has changed for lesbians and gay men, i don't think people will

because it's kind of hard to find jobs when you are transgender.ed soliciting and got into drugs. and basically soliciting became my life. drug use became my life. >> survival sex is what we as law enforcement identify it. they are doing that because they have been put out on the street by their parents. they have no place to go. so they need money. and, you know, they haven't been able to get a job. so they have sex. >> when a car pulls over for you, it is scary. you never know who's behind the steering wheel and what's going to take place. they could turn the corner and pull out a gun and it could be the end of it. >> we've had several homicides in the last six months of transgender male prostitutes. i want to believe and feel that most men who pick up a prostitute realize they're taking up a male. and that may be what they're interested in but there may be a confrontation at the end if they feel like it's not. >> there are times men pick me up thinking we're a female. and we ride for a few minutes and they are like you are a female, right? and o

in terms of groups like transgendered americans left out they get it twofold. a broader society a sexual minority, but also within the movement they feel sidelined with and the movement but they are very small portion of the overall population and the lgbt population but nevertheless nobody feels good about being marginalized but it is also meant in part that might generalization has occurred because they haven't had the same resources as lesbian and gay individuals have had in part because of struggles facing they face as transgendered individuals in society, losing jobs, getting discriminated against and some of those things have led to lower resource base even though they have their own groups that are separate from broader lgbt groups and those groups have become a little larger more recently, they are still relatively small compared to the main lgbt groups. if you think of the development of the lgbt movement in the united states in many countries from the 1916s and 70s going forward the group was dominated by white gay men and it wasn't until the 1980s an

it continues to be gay men and adolescence and those under 25 years old and transgender individuals. one thing about the data is we need to do a better job about who is the transgender individuals and receiving better care citywide. we'll continue to work on that and improve within our own network and population in house. here is some of the data that really support how this affected men who have sex with men in san francisco. you see both gonorrhea and chlamydia rates per hundred thousand population for men and females. and then for adolescence, for -- gonorrhea rates as well and african american against other ethnicities. we have a little understanding for why std rates are increasing because of participation in the national hiv surveillance program which is cdc funded and involves 26 states in the united states. san francisco is one of them and there is a survey of gay men and they have their blood taken for hiv testing. these are the waves that have occurred since 2004. the blue line are people reporting always using condoms for anal sex. the red line reports sex without condoms

who expressed a transgender identity while still in school. students experienced bullying physical assault, sexual violence and they also experienced thoughts of suicide. students who had been harassed and abuse bit teachers showed dramatically worse health and other outcomes. so we asked psychiatrist joshua weiner about gender dysphoria. dr. weiner any idea what causes gender dysphoria? >> we don't know. but this really shouldn't be all that surprising. we think maybe there's some genetic influence, maybe some environmental influence like in utero development, but we don't even really know what causes depression so to figure out what's causing something as rare as gender dysphoria is very difficult. >> and is there any increased risk of suicide in transgender teens. >> absolutely. this is one of the prime problems. teens with gender dysphoria have about a 50% risk of making a suicide attempt five to eight times higher than the general population so you want to take this issue seriously and make sure that these kids are getting the necessary t
