southeastern part of the city is neglected in the conversation and transit first is no exception. i want to acknowledge, although there has been outreach, the meetings have been held inside city hall and we know how challenging it is not only to get down to city hall but to take time to be a part of the conversations. i much prefer to see community meetings inside the communities that they're looking to garner feedback from. and i think that the legislation is presented as a nonchalant legislation. it's inocculative. that is how it happens. that's how it starts. it starts little by little, inch by inch, eating around the edges. i would ask that if people want this legislation, they should be able to opt in. i'm asking for a carve-out. i'm asking that you take out district 10, so we can study it more and understand the impacts. parking cars, vehicles, is a reality. and it feels very prescriptive that a very vocal, well-organized, very -- vocal and organized group of people have a vision of what san francisco should be going and the direction and forcing that decision on all parts of

but both of those things really are about implementing the city 's transit first policy. the transit first policy was a drop -- adopted in 1973. as you can see on this picture, transit only lanes have been a mainstay of how the city has implemented those policies since then. this is an older picture on the left of gary in 1978. and how we used to designate transit lanes was just with paint. or white lines in writing on the lane itself and signs. and then in 2013, we tried a pilot on church street between sixth street, a three block stretch to paint the lane it read to improve compliance and improve the lane itself. we reduced -- we were able to reduce violations in half by putting those red lanes on church street. this map depicts now where we hold out a red lanes around the city. this is a representation of the division chart. the vehicle code. essentially, it shows where transit lanes are, and what type of lanes they are. we have about 30 miles total of transit only lanes in the city. there is about 13 miles of red transit lanes, and a transit lane must be 24-hour lane b

think it was the early seventies, there was legislation was passed to make san francisco a transit first city. as you can imagine, we have spent hundreds of millions, if not a few billions on trying to get there. quite frankly, almost 40 years later, we are still not quite there, at least on the outer extremity. i use this as an example. people who are thinking into the future, forward thinking and big thinking, we are not so much limited to the costs associated with big picture thinking. so -- thank you.
