he blamed the lack of adequate funding in the current transportation bill. lahood told reem this administration will have to come up with a bold plan to not only fix our highways but also our unsafe bridges. here's a little background. if you remember, the current transportation bill was passed just in the nick of time last summer, but they passed it only for two years because of a lack of funding. normally it's for five years. so that's a big deal because we're going to have to revisit that again in 2014. so he is known to advocate for livable communities. he's very pro-bike, very pro- pedestrian and he lives right near work. well, he's retiring so he's saying whoever replaces him is going to have to come up with some pretty out of the box thinking because even those things that he advocates for have suffered as well in the current bill. >> you were talking about infrastructure yesterday. didn't we have a big traffic problem with something underneath a bridge and the big potholes. >> overnight we have pothole repair. >> remember the stimulus package how we

the state senate approved a new transportation bill. it will replace the states gasoline tax, including a 6% levee on diesel fuel. it will increase from 5 to 5.3%. the senate adjourned on friday before voting on the legislation. in the coming weeks, the d.c. city council is expected to debate on some new law on truancy. the new chairman of the council's education committee is pushing for the new ordinance while mayor gray opposes it. today, there was a forum on truancy at ann beers elementary school in the hillcrest neighborhood. john henrehan was there and joining us live from the newsroom. was the proposed now law a major topic in. >> and that is largely the topic. when high introduced it, part of the new law required mandatory -- when unexcused absences exceeded 20 days a year and he's willing to drop that provision and believes that city intervention is necessary when students don't come to school. there has always been a certain amount of truancy among d.c. public school students. a generation ago, truancy was squelched by families

the help of our politicians in washington by getting a small change in language in recent transportation funding bill that actually allowed for the district then to apply for federal funding for -- to assist in building the suicide barrier. likewise, the k-rail, the movable k-rail has gone -- has taken a lot longer to achieve than one would hope to cut down on the accidents in the middle of the bridge there. and in a way, the very position i've asked myself to be put in, is a difficult one because i find myself in the very thick of conversations about labor negotiations at the board. but i think at the same time, i've been useful in those conversations. we in the unions have traditions that have been built up over many years coming out both of our need to answer to our members and the structure of our work itself. and it is not always immediately apparent to others what those traditions are and how to work with them and how to understand us when we are speaking to you about things. i think i've managed to help the board at points in negotiations when that sort of complication arose. ordinariction it'
