measures, have the great responsibility of ensuring that the transportation security administration, the department of homeland security, customs and border protection, and other relevant agencies are doing their due diligence to ensure that the flights departing from cuba to the united states are secure. although not last points of departure, the recent bombings of planes originating from mogadishu, which one was killed, and sharm el-sheikh, tragically killing everyone on board, serves as a stern reminder that there are those who wish to do us harm using commercial aircraft. there are over 300 airports around the world that serve as last points of departure, or foreign airports that fly directly to the u.s. the standard is always that tsa and other relevant entities perform the investigation and mitigation measures necessary to ensure that these flights are not able to be targeted by nefarious characters. as i understand it, the agencies' efforts to inspect and prepare the cuban airports are no different than stringent inspection efforts and regulatory schemes that are in place at

this is coming from a memory from the tsa administrator saying that kelly hogan who is in charge of security for the transportationurity administration has been removed, or reassigned, at this point. and reassigned with a new acting security person in charge, a person who has been a leadership in a leadership position above l.a.x. and jfk, two of the largest airports. in that memo, we're also talking about new leadership in chicago's o'hare airport where we've had so many long liones ad a lot of focus there recently. and they will open a new command center here at the tsa headquarters when they have incidents like this. back to hogan for a moment, the chief of security, he's been reassigned. according to documents, hogan made $90,000 in one year in bonuses. while the tsa was under scrutiny. the latest inspector general's report showed not only the long lines we've been dealing with now, but mismanagement within the tsa. apparently, they missed a lot of explosives and firearms that were sent through as a test at several airports. so the tsa has been under a lot of scrutiny. this new administrator was brought in to

an important hearing today, the public comes in in regular contact with the transportation security administration. we have a fairly new administrator who i've had a chance to visit with and -- but it is important as the oversight committee that we continue to take a look at what's happening, or not happening, at the tsa. today we're going to have our second hearing examining the management practices and misconduct that we've heard about and seen about and investigated at the transportation security administration. this time of year, the traveling public picks up kids and families and people are traveling sometimes at record levels. people get frustrated they go to airports, there are long lines, there's frustration, but at the same time we have to find a balance to make sure that those airplanes are properly secure because the enemy, terrorists, and what not, they only need to get by once and they deal with millions of passengers on a weekly basis, the tsa. we have a lot of good men and women who serve on the front lines who are trying to do the best job they can. sometimes they're hot and sweaty
