we must be sober about the risks we face and not be traumatized by technology and all the wonders of modern progress and power. ultimately all we have left at the end is each other and what keeps us human. this carving is an example of how when the world was afflicted with mass discretion, -- destruction, the soldier just tried to stay human. as a emergency physician, this photograph gets to me. you have a soldier with half of his face gone. as a doctor working with trauma patients. the degree of injury this represents, or someone is mortally wounded but survives and yet they are traumatized for the rest of their life. is what this rendering conveys. this carving was made in 1914 not after the war began. it represents not only the injury, the physical injuries to a soldier but also the psychic injuries to the society. in french the symbol of the half face related to world war i goes to the heart and soul of so many french people because they lost not just millions of young men. in this war. but, it was a psychic wound that stayed and scarred the society for generations. they felt it.
