police standoff continues on treasure island. mps to the island from the bay bridge are closed now. it began before midnight when police began chasing a suspect. amy hollyfield is live near the scene. >> reporter: let me get out of the way so you can see what the traffic situation looks like this is the upper deck, westbound traffic moving okay there is an officer positioned overthere, across the lanes of traffic blocking the off-ramp to get on to treasure island, no one is allowed on or off. residents are stuck. we have pictures of some people who are stuck in san francisco one man took these pictures for us, these are treasure island residents who can't go home, they are getting help from the red cross. they don't have shelter, they don't have food. police have the island shutdown because they are negotiating with a man who they say has a gun and they say he's suicidal. they've got him surrounded on land and water. they've got coast guard officers on boats in case he heads out into the bay. right now he has left his car but he's

a standoff at treasure island is finally over. ople living in the area were not able to get on or off the island for nearly 7 hours all morning all night long. cbs 5 reporter elissa harrington in san francisco. she has the latest on what's been a long ordeal. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. the standoff is over. the suspect is dead and ramps to treasure island are in the process of being reopened. now, that suspect died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. this all started last night at around 11:00 when police attempted to pull him over in downtown san francisco. they say that he was driving a stolen car. he wouldn't stop and let officers on a chase over the bay bridge and was firing at officers although none of them was hurt. he finally pulled over on the treasure island off-ramp. now, this shut down treasure island for more than 6 hours. people could not get on or off. that man brandished his weapon and then held it to his head. a crisis negotiation team tried to get him to surrender and during that standoff police used

police who said again because of the proximity of where this is all happening, leading on to treasure island because it is such a narrow area they are not allowing people on or off the island and they are requesting no helicopters be flown over because it could affect the negotiations with this suspect who is at that access road leading tonight treasure island. and that access on and off treasure island is completely shut down in both directions. we have video of the suspect out of his vehicle sitting on a railing and san francisco police were all around him and they informed us this started as a police pursuit at 11:00 last night. police said during that pursuit, the suspect fired at least one shot at officers and they chased him and he began holding a gun to his own head threatening suicide. the suspect is believed to be duncan phillips and he is wanted for assault and for stealing a car in venetia. residents of the island have been frustrated driving back and forth unable to go home. >> we could not just get in and they were asking us to go back to the city or go someplace else or somethi
