treasure island. treasure island and dallas county has nearly 5000 people. at the other end of the spectrum is sanibel. with under 400 people. square mile. why would you go live on treasure island? there are more than 100 rivers that run through gulf and are responsible or help make the gulf riches environments in the world. there are more than 200 estuaries in the gulf of mexico. a quarter of all estuaries of the united states. you have barrier islands on one side and freshwater coming through and mixing in with salt water which makes the estuaries but you have the barrier islands that help contain that salt and freshwater mix. also, among those estuaries are coastal marshes and nearly half of all coastal marshes in the united states are on the gulf of mexico. most of those in louisiana. a good portion of them in the florida big bend. another form of estuary is mangrove forest. the florida is home to the majority of the country's mandrels. these marvelous estuaries have made the golf fishery, the commercial fish wary, more productive than those of the east

joe vazquez is on treasure island tonight. joe? >> reporter: that barge is still 50 feet underwater here in the bay. the good news is it is not impeding barge traffic. three days after it sank the coastguard now says it has found the exact position of the 112-foot freight barge vengeance after it went under friday near the bay bridge. there was some concern about whether the vessel would damage the transbay tube. the underwater tunnel houses the b.a.r.t. train system. today the coastguard said it has worked with contractors and found the barge has settled on the floor of the bay above the tube which is protected by a 25 to 30-foot layer of earth. the coastguard says it has performed sonar scans and tube inspections and it's determined that the sunken vessel poses no threat to the b.a.r.t. system. the vennel gens was carrying about 4 -- vengeance was carrying about 4,000 gallons of diesel fuel and 3,000 gallons of hydraulic fuel when it capsized. >> this is a larger amount. it's not something we see frequently. 4,000 gallons is more

the problem we face and we need lafco to take this up especially since the treasure island authority is a separate agency and it falls under your purview is that when we have spoken for the epa and the department of toxic substances in the bay view hunter's point we are able to get the navy to hold up and transsdperz we have stopped the transfers of the property in the bay view hunter's point, and treasure island is not officially recognized even though it is really dangerous, and toxic ask radioactive. it is not recognized by the federal government as a super fund site. so what epa has said to us that it is not in their jurisdiction and so we need a mechanism to get the halting that is happening in the bay view unter's point before the lands are transferred to happen on treasure island to protect those residents from radiation, no one is doing that right now. so i would strongly recommend that since the board is not taking this up, we need -- >> great, thank you so much. >> is there any other member of the public? i would just like to direct executive officer if you could maybe just
