we're joining by msnbc national reporter tremaine lee. what woo we learned?he affidavits around 8:06 p.m. dylann roof walked into mother emanuel church with a fanny pack and a gun. he sat for an hour, as you mentioned at some point he opened fire on the group. killing nine people. one addition we didn't know until yesterday when we read the affidavit. at some point he stood over a witness and uttered some sort of racially inflammatory statement. they didn't say exactly what it was. but there was something of a racially charged nature. he exited looked both ways hopped in his car. police say that dylann roof's father confirmed that dylan did own a .45-caliber handgun. on the scene they found found .45-caliber shell casings, they've matched the gun or at least the shell casings to the type of gun used in the crime. so again, here he is in the detention center behind us apparently he has a neighboring cell to the michael sclaglager, the officer who killed eded michael scott. >> we will be checking back in with you later. >>> up next, a father and a son with deep

joining me now is msnbc's tremaine lee who was inside the church for the service. tremaine, good day to you. talk about the mood there. it is remarkable for us to witness. >> reporter: you used the words that were so appropriate in your intro about grace. and this community under such duress has shown great grace. in the tradition of black churches, death isn't necessarily a punishment life is not necessarily a reward and that every single day they embrace their faith. the preacher inside said while evil was visited upon this church and tried to force its doors closed that today was a show, and putting the evil on notice that this church will not close. and that if anyone expected this community and this church to respond in any other way than grace, then they certainly don't know this community or this church. so while the mood was certainly somber, just the floor below the sanctuary, nine people were gunned down in cold blood, the people within the sanctuary rose together in their voices responding to the preacher for his calls of not turning away from god, but tu

tamir rice's father is speaking out with msnbc's tremaine lee. >> what kind of memories do you hold onmir? >> ranking on each other, laughing about that playing video games. >> where do you feel him most? >> in my heart. >> in your heart. is that tough to it feel him in there and not here? >> real tough. >> joining me now is veteran prosecutor paul henderson. thank you for being here. >> plerasure to be here. >> paul, prosecutor says the investigation could be finished in a matter of months. what is your take on that? >> well, obviously what he's talking about is his decision to use the grand jury. and we've talked about this before the prosecutor at anytime can charge on his own initiative and produce by way of preliminary hearing for charges like this. and so saying that it will be extended by a matter of months means that he's going to present the evidence to a grand jury to seek an indictment and to seek criminal charges rather than just filing the charges himself and presenting them in front of a judge. and we've heard commentary about what they think might happen or could happen

we start by going to tremaine lee at the charleston county detention center. here dylann roof is being held. tremaine, yesterday we got our formal proceedings involving dylann roof. what does the road forward look like from here? >> reporter: legally speaking, this is just the beginning. judge set a $1 million bond on the gun charge, but didn't have authority for setting bail. dylann appeared via closed circuit television. for the first time we heard the family members of his victims speak. they spoke of great pain and anguish saying they welcomed him into their church for bible study, he took from them so much more than they could ever get back. for the first time we saw the outpouring of grief from the family. dylann roof's family releasing a statement saying they are shocked and saddened by what happened. as the community is reeling, dylann roof will begin the process. still this community is piecing together slowly everything that dylann roof has taken from them. >> adam reese outside the church, in terms of what the reaction is, can you set the scene for w
