joining me now, arizona congressman trent franks.thank you for joining us this afternoon. >> happy thanksgiving. thanks for having me on. arthel: thank you. and i want to jump in there on senator collins. as you well know, her vote is needed to pass the gop legislation. and you heard her saying that she would like the obamacare individual mandate to buy health insurance either included in separate legislation or folded into the tax bill. and senator collins, she's arguing that if individuals are not forced to buy health insurance, premiums would go up which would eat any tax cuts that they would get. congressman franks, do you agree? >> well, obviously, i don't agree with senator collins. i think it's outrageous that we would fine someone for not buying something that didn't want and didn't work for them. and i'm just astonishing that senate collins holds the position that she does, but time will tell whether she's able to look at the thing from a holistic 50 ,000-foot view. i hope in the final analysis she'll vote for it. arthel: an

here is republican congressman trent franks from arizona. he is a member of the house freedom caucus. good to see you, congressman. the senate dropped the ball on health care reform but kind of making up for it by putting the individual mandate or taking the individual mandate in to the tax bill, their version of the tax bill. would the house do the same? >> oh i think we would embrace that in a heartbeat. am glad to see that they have done this. i said obamacare is the policy equivalent of the hindenburg. we can't do it any damage. it is complete utter disaster. this is move in the right direction. this will make the tax bill a much better bill. i have to suggest to you, be very honest, i didn't think we might, i didn't think there was a real possibility of doing this. i'm very encouraged that we are. david: we're looking at some of the differences between the house bill and senate bill. frankly there are a lot of things about the senate bill are discouraging to those that wanted simpler tax bill, keeping seven tax brackets. if you have a s

military matters, foreign policy for a member of the house armed service committee representative trent franks for many years. and i lean on that part of your expertise when i say what do we really talk about giving china? because it's got to come down to something more than just taking away or does it? >> well, no, i mean, we can have, again, we've got this trade deal. president trump has been very clear, wants to have good relations with china. he wants a good trade relationship. but the big thing, there's two big things. obviously, you know, the trade aspect not wanting military force being used in the korean peninsula. it also doesn't want a stronger more militarized japan. and japan, abe of japan has a great relationship with president trump. there's a lot of solidarity there and he's been looking at what are the options that japan needs if we don't get a handle on north korea and if china isn't going to be, you know, more of a ball player here with the united states and our allies in the region. china doesn't want that. so we've got a combination of carrots and sticks here. but really, i

to read of all of this and into all of this, congressman trent franks.t you are hearing? >> well, you know, takes a little while for the senate to catch up with the house most of the time. i don't know what will ultimately happen here, neil. i do hope in terms of the locals date tax reduction that they take the house version because it is unfathomable that they will think somehow the 18 states that are more fiscally sounded more fiscally wise, force them to subsidize those things that are not. this is something that, you know, our opportunity to put pressure on state that are high tax, big government states to lower burden on the people. i hope desperately we hope i'm too doing away with the deduction for the state and local taxes. i understand mr. brady has retained up to $10,000 on the property tax reduction that i suppose would be probably trying to find the balance. if the senate really is talking about putting the deduction back in, and that is an embarrassingly inapt thing to do. neil: one of the other things they are raising, they are hamstrung, a
