nbc news correspondent michael isikoff is in trenton, new jersey. set the stage for us, what are we expecting inside that courtroom this morning? >> reporter: first of all, all eyes will be on bridget kelly, she is in that courtroom. this is, in fact, her first public appearance since she was fired by governor christie and essentially called a liar. she's not going to testify. she won't be speaking, but there is an interesting legal argument going on. this is not about whether or not she and bill stepien have the right not to testify. they had that right under the fifth amendment. this is a question about whether they have to respond to the subpoena and turn over all documents, e-mails, text messages, that they might have in possession regarding those lane closures. now what her lawyers are arguing is that the wording of that subpoena forces kelly and stepien to decide for themselves what e-mails and text messages might be relevant to that power play and, in effect, by making that decision, they are testifying. there is some supreme court precedent

. >> and nbc news national investigative correspondent michael isikoff joins us from trenton. catch us up. there have been a lot of attractions and people may not have been focus on the latest from where you are in trenton. what have we seen today? and how effective was bill stepien's attorney with the judge? >> reporter: actually, it was a pretty interesting legal argument about the contours of the fifth amendment privilege, fifth amendment right. reed schaar said that bridget kelly is critical to this investigation. in order for the legislative committee to find out what happened here, they have to know what was behind that famous e-mail time for traffic problems in ft. lee. where did that come from? did somebody order it? but her lawyers and bill stepien's lawyers have said, look, this subpoena that the committee is requesting is so broad and asking -- it's essentially asking them to testify against themselves by identifying documents, e-mails and text messages, they have that might in some way be related to those lane closures. first the judge mary jacobson had pretty shar

let's go to the courtroom drama in trenton today. bridget kelly, the key witness in this investigation, appeared in new jersey superior court today to wage war against state investigators who are demanding she comply with a subpoena for documents. her attorney threw down the gauntlet in court, argue thanksgiving would concede nothing, nada. he wouldn't even acknowledge that bridget kelly wrote, quote, time for some traffic problems in fort lee." but then he took it even further. listen to her lawyer. >> everybody says my god, this does it. this is the document. we duce the lanes. okay. so when i look at this document, i look at it. on its face, on its face does it regard the george washington bridge? nope. on its face, does it regard the reduction of three lanes to one access lanes on the george washington bridge? no. on its face, does it relate to activities between september 9th and september 12th? no. now, it doesn't on its face. so if i respond hypothetically, if i respond and turn over this document, he will basically be testify

late today in a trenton conference room, chris christie reentered the media arena.of facing the lions, the only things missing as he intimidate and taunted members of the press corps were a chair and a whip.
