ault, abc news, new york. >> trevor, thank you. >>> these growing vaccine shortages are raising new questions of what to do with the remaining vaccine supplies we have. i spoke earlier with dr. ryan ribiera. dr. ribiera, because of the new variants of the coronavirus, there's a concern of another big surge of infections in the next few weeks. do we prioritize and give more people the first shot and delay second shots to get ahead of the next surge? >> well, you know, the answer is we don't really know how safe it is to delay the second shot. i know the cdc recently said that you can get your second dose as much as six weeks after the first. we don't know very much how long immunity lasts after that. there's data coming out of israel after vaccinating a large part of their population. one of their studies show that after the first dose, you only had 33% protection. so, you know, we need to get more data. but if 33% ends up being accurate, i would be concerned about policies that would encourage us to skip or substantially delay second doses. >> doctor, mask mandates are now being imp

trevor joins us now from the javits center in new york city. i want to get back to the variants, the uk variant now in at least 32 states. and tonight, there are growing calls for the u.s. to switch up its vaccine strategy? >> reporter: at least one prominent health specialist says the biden administration should be administering as many first doses as possible, even if they have to wait for the second dose. but officials like dr. anthony fauci have strongly resisted that in the past. >> trevor, thank you. >>> next tonight, former president trump's looming senate impeachment trial set to begin in just over a week. after a team of attorneys quit this weekend, there's news just in about who will defend him. here's rachel scott. >> reporter: tonight, with just over a week until his second impeachment trial, former president donald trump has a brand new legal team. after all five of his lawyers left. sources say they resigned in part over strategy, and trump's desire to argue the baseless claim that the election was stolen. >> we will never give up

we heard about this in trevor's piece. hospitalizations are down in 30 states, and it looks like we're past that post-holiday peak. looking at the numbers we're seeing now, are we nearing the end of all of this? do you feel positive about where we are in the country right now? >> yes. i think i worry about the super bowl because i think we didn't listen to public health officials with -- regarding thanksgiving or christmas, and after both of those events we saw a bump and i fear we're going to see a bump now because people are compelled to gather together in groups without masks or social distance, but i do think all in all things are definitely getting better. we have two excellent vaccines that are out there. we have more than 30 million people that have received at least one dose, although that's not enough. you need the two-dose vaccine. that's a start. we have more than 2% of the population that's gotten both doses, and we say that 26 million or 27 million people have been infected in this country. but those are just

in october, lisa's son trevor, committed suicide in the state of illinois. his mother is suing the state over her son's death. she says the lockdowns played a role in his suicide. because she was standing up to the people who imposed those lockdowns, lisa's attorney is now getting death threats. this is one of those messages. it's awful but we're just playing it for you because we want you to know it's real. >> this trevor mother -- [ bleep ] she can't stay at home for a year and -- [laughter] >> tucker: so we have mixed feelings about playing that, obviously, but we did because it's real. laura is a lawyer representing lisa and other parents. she joins us tonight. laura, thanks so much for coming on. that's awful, obviously. we hope that man doesn't represent many other people but there are a lot of people, decent people, who aren't taking the effects of this lockdowns in our view seriously enough. tell us what you think the effects have been? >> well, you know, since we filed this case, you know, remember america is a small nonprofit foundation in illinois
