washington correspondent trevor shirley is in dc with more. >> and u.s. officials are sending a clear message to china not to get directly involved. washington is growing more concerned that china could soon send lethal military aid to russia. their weapons would in effect be used for the slaughter of people in ukraine. officially, china says its neutral when it comes to the war. but there are signs of a growing partnership between moscow and beijing and in-person meeting between russian president vladimir putin and chinese president xi jinping could happen as soon as next week. there should be. >> serious red line with regard to them supplying military equipment to the russians. and i think that should be in the form of sanctions. u.s. officials say there's no indication china's already giving military equipment to russia and they're hoping it stays that way. i think it would be ill advised for china to move forward. but of course, that's a decision beijing is going to have to make for itself. in the meantime, some lawmakers want the u.s. to supply f 16

washington correspondent trevor shirley has those details. lawmakers say part of the problem isn't just stopping people from taking fentanyl. >> but from cutting off the illegal supply lines that are getting this drug into the country in the first place, that's the focus of a senate hearing today. fentanyl, a synthetic opioid is blamed for fueling the opioid epidemic and causing thousands of overdose deaths a year according to the dea, mexico and china are the 2 biggest producers and illegal export ers of fentanyl. officials say much of what ends up in the u.s. is trafficked here illegally from those 2 countries. at today's hearing, lawmakers are questioning dea officials as well as narcotics experts from the state department. there's bipartisan agreement within the senate that more needs to be done to stop the fentanyl from getting into the u.s.. but also more effort made to get the governments of countries like mexico and china to crack down on the drugs, illegal production within their own borders. dea administrator anne milgram says once
