grady trimble live on capitol hill with the latest. reporter: lawmakers grilled muilenberg for two half hours questioning whether boeing was a little too cozy with faa regulators as many critics said. they questioned whether boeing put profits over safety in a rush to get the 737 max certified that was involved in two crashes t has been grounded since the second one in march. muilenberg admitted the company made mistakes. there was a problem with the flight control system largely to blame in both those crashes. families of the victims, they looked on here in the hearing room, holding photos of loved ones. they're not satisfied with muilenberg's answers or his apology today. >> i don't care for mr. muilenberg's remarks. i don't know what he feels inside. i get my solace from my friends and family, not from the people who caused the death of my sister. >> these loved ones never had a chance. they were in flying coffins. >> i would walk before i get on a 737 max. reporter: muilenberg told lawmakers that the 737 max is getting in final sta

grady trimble has breaking news on the uaw vote. what is it?e just learned from a source familiar with the vote that the workers have approved this contract, this tentative agreement, now effectively becoming a contract for them for the next four years, and also, effectively ending this 40-day strike. this strike has lasted as long, almost as long as any strike in the last several decades. it's the longest since 1970. workers foregoing thousands of dollars of wages over the last 40 days and apparently, they think that this deal is good enough for that 40-day strike to justify it. we have learned that they have approved it. we don't have the official numbers yet. we are still waiting on that officially from the uaw. we are expecting this to develop very quickly in the next half hour or so as they get that official vote count. we should be hearing from the uaw. we should also be hearing from general motors, who has lost up to $2 billion in this strike, but there you see general motors stock, it's been climbing all day on this expected news. it's

grady trimble live in detroit. what is the latest, grady?s been a slow day here at the renaissance center, general motors headquarters in downtown detroit. local union leaders have been meeting in this room behind closed doors. what they're doing, they're pouring over the tentative agreement that the uaw released earlier today. i want to put on a screen to show you the a graphic of some highlights of this contract. one thing in the agreement, tentative agreement, will stand out, has a lot of workers upset, several plants that general motors closed earlier this year are going to remain closed under this tentative agreement. that includes one in lord town, ohio, which drawn a lot of eyes this political season. president called the gm about it earlier this year. the two sides were not able to get to agreement that kept that one and two others in warren, michigan and baltimore. there is path for temporary workers to full time employment and health care stays the same and wage increases an bonus into the contract. will it be enough for union lead

grady trimble with more. reporter: we just learned report the united auto workers, gm employees approved the tentative agreement effectively ending the 40-day strike all the 50,000 voters, workers had the opportunity to vote on the contract throughout the week with voting ending today. we don't have official numbers because voting closed at 4:00 eastern. this was kind of expected by general motors stock. it has been climbing all day today. it is up 2 1/2% at the close. the people who like this contract, the workers who voted in favor of it, said hey, this gives us pay increases. our health care costs stay the same. we get an 11,000-dollar signing bonus there were people who weren't quite happy of happy of it. it didn't do enough to protect american jobs. it confirmed the closure of three plants. the signing bonus might have swayed workers. they lost $6,000 of lost wages while out on strike. that signing bonus allowed them to break even and then some quite a bit. this contract negotiation are important, ford a

christina, we'll check back in with you a little bit later but want check in with our meteorologist john trimble who has been tracking the winds. >>the low humidity. as we head into the afternoon. so what's the latest john. >>already a warm start guys and we are seeing windy conditions in the vicinity of the fire shouldn't be a big surprise actually that the northern end of the blaze is actually expanding faster than the southern and because the further north you get towards cloverdale nasty is actually where the strongest of winds are the further south you head to work or seen a standing right now in healdsburg actually a little bit calmer so this blaze expanding in those areas where you are seeing some of those highest of winds currently asking look at this regular winds gusting as high as 41 miles per hour cloverdale at 39 miles per hour. these are very intense winds and populated areas down lower in elevation you head up higher than that above 1000 feet winds are even stronger yet with gusts as high as 60 miles per hour. so this fire could potentially rapidly ntinuto grow so many communities

grady trimble in chicago, the big news in the big labor fight of the year.orter: yes finally, the 40 day strike is officially over, both sides making the announcement today and general motors is eager to get its factories up and running again since they been down for the past six weeks. they will restart work at 30 u.s. factories immediately. they were waiting the past week for voters or workers to vote to approve a tentative agreement that will not become a contract. i want to show you the final vote, 57% of workers approving of this contract and only 43% say no. general motors ceo releasing a statement saying we delivered a contract that recognizes our employees for the import contribution they make to the overall success of the company. as one team we can move forward. this contract included pay increases that, and keeps health insurance is same and includes an $11000 signing bonus. in the own statement the uaw thanked workers for their sacrifice on the picket lines for six weeks but that $11000 signing bonus will more than make up for what they lost duri

grady trimble has been following all of the crosscurrents as we head into week five.> neil, 275 a week that is still about $1000 less than workers are used to getting when working in the assembly plants and parts distribution centers around the country. we're about a month into this strike. if you think about it, the bills are really piling up for the workers as they would be anybody in a month's time. they have car payments. they have mortgages or rents to pay, car insurance. they're trying to figure out how to get buy on that strike pay. even though it was upped but just by a little bit. who is losing more as the strike continues on the 29th day? just looking at numbers, general motors is. they have lost more than $1 billion according to one analyst, the workers on the other hand, about half that. they have given up $624 million in wages. but you know, a dollar means a lot more to worker than it does to a multibillion-dollar company. on top of that, moody's released a report last week saying this. a substantial portion of these earnings could be recouped by general

let's get to grady trimble who has been out on the picket lines nearly every day since day one. grady, any word on what the pickets are hearing out there and when it could become official? >> well, i would say that they are cautiously optimistic. in terms of when this tentative agreement becomes an official deal, it could be a while because all of the roughly 50,000 uaw general motors members will have to vote to ratify the contract. so for now they remain on the picket line. in the meantime, we're getting details about the contract. in terms of anything official, neither side is telling us exactly what the contract holds, but what we do know from a source close to the negotiations that one thing that was important for the union was creating a pathway to full-time employment for temporary workers. we are told they were able to put that into the contract. i actually talked with a temporary worker who was very excited to hear when this deal came down that it might include a provision for her -- she's worked three years for gm, she's still considered a temporary employee. now she t

grady trimble has the details. reporter: we're told mary barra called for the meeting this is the first time she has been involved in these negotiations since the strike started 25 days ago. and we're told there were five people in this meeting. it was mary barra herself, as well as two top negotiators from general motors and two top negotiators on the uaw side. uaw president gary jones and the vice president. as far as what was discussed in the meeting that depends which side you ask. the purpose i'm told to inject new life into the negotiations and get two sides to really get back together, to start taking contract talks seriously again. you remember over the weekend things hit a wall in terms of the contract negotiations. i'm told that kind of carried into the week but then, the meeting seems to have worked because after this meeting yesterday, talks continued late into the night on wednesday night and then actually into the morning until about 3:00 a.m. today. there is really growing pressure on both sides to r

lauren: let's go to grady trimble live outside general motors' headquarters with the latest. grady. where do we stand this morning. >> reporter: good morning, cheryl. in few hours, barring any unexpected developments, local leaders are expected to meet at general motors headquarters and he vote in favor of a tentative agreement. the details of that agreement are still unknown. the union and gm have kept them under wraps this morning but we're expecting to see wage increases for workers as well as a signing bonus. some other things we're expecting in the tentative agreement are plans for at least one idled plant, the detroit hamtramck facility, just a few miles from here. general motors was planning to idle that plant later this year, actually at the beginning of next year. now we're told it will make an electric pickup truck. on top of that, we're told the contract will include a path for temporary workers to full-time employment after three years of cervix and health insurance -- service and health insurance costs will remain unchanged. the workers remain on the picket line.
