i want to bring in british talk show host trisha goddard. you heard the response from prince william. he said we are very much not a racist family. were you surprised to hear him speak out? >> well, i was surprised at the stupidity of the questions. we train journalists not to ask closed questions. what was he meant to say? yes, we are. and i absolutely agree with that comment. when i'm talking about racism in britain, i try to avoid the term systematic or institutional racism because i don't actually think it's well understood. you can talk about it in the united states because slavery happened on this soil. you still have issues like red lining and the bussing of students that many people often still remember. britain doesn't have that, remember. their slavery was done overseas out of sight. there absolutely needs to be an education especially amongst journalists and the media. >> what do you think the prince's response to the question -- you didn't like the question, but what did you think of the response? >> i thought it was more telling

so i want to bring in now tv presenter trisha goddard. have been working around the clock on this story. i've been watching you all day. we have never gotten -- thank you for joining us, by the way. we've never gotten a look inside the royal family like this. what did you think when you heard meghan markle say an unnamed family member was concerned or had conversations with harry about how dark archie's skin color might be? >> shocked, but not surprised really. you know, that is what the british empire is, after all, built on. here's the problem in britain. it's very different, i think, in the united states compared to britain and there are two things -- many things at play here. for one thing, i think racism -- british people, in general, don't see racism as a problem. british white people. and they define racism as something like being beaten up for your color, very overt things. the whole concept of systemic racism while it's discussed quite a lot in the united states, it's not really discussed in britain. the united states, you had sl

let's discuss this with a jushlt, former british talk show host trisha goddard. expect the royal family to do more to convey they're addressing the issues, the very serious issues that meghan markle raised about race and mental health? >> i think they're going to deal with these in-house first. and i always say look at it as a family. i know they're royalty, but they're a family first. and as they said, recollections of certain situations differ. and that's the same with all families. you can have an argument and everyone will see it from their own point of view. but what i think the royal family is trying to avoid, i certainly hope it's trying to avoid, is finger pointing at who said what with regards racism because that actually -- i think it's a waste of time. the whole british monarchy is based on what we now know to be very racist practices, going back to the days of slavery and empire building and what have you. but they are here today. and they have got to address those things within their own family before they start dictating anything to anyone else. wha

>> joining us nous host of quest means business richard quest and tv presenter and journalist trisha goddard isn't this the problem? isn't this what got the palace in trouble to begin with silence when meghan comes and says i need help with mental health. silence when prince charles is asked a direct question, sir, what did you think of the interview? so, isn't this silence revelatory in its own way? >> you're playing by a different set of rules here, john. that means we can't really fathom how they think. they will be viewing this as we're not going to be rushed into a response. we're not politicians. we don't resign. we don't suddenly get fired. it's an institution that goes back 1,200 years. now, in a social media age where you want a quick response to an accusation, that is not going to happen. and the palace -- you and i may sit and fume about the way they do it over there, but the reality they will turn around and say, yes, we have been doing this way in 1,000 years and a measured response at the right time will be the way forward. it's not satisfying for a 24-hour news cycle, but that
